Freshman Scholarships

Gentlemen: The Northwestern Alumni have been presented with a proposal from the undergrad chapter to fund a scholarship for a deserving freshman male student.

The idea seems pretty well conceived, and I understand that Sig Ep and Beta Theta Pi have had similar programs for years.

Our major concern (as the alumni board) was that manpower might not be available, especially since most of the legwork needs to be done during Summer Quarter (when few members are actually on campus).

Can you guys give me some feedback on how these programs work at other campuses? Good, bad, doesn't matter - I just want to gather some data to present at our April meeting. Thanks for your input.

Its a great recruitment tool. Do it. Coordinate it through your campus' scholarship office. They will promote it for you. All ya'll will need to do is create a brochure outlining the requirements and a tidbit about the academic standards / achievements of your chapter. Everyone will put the brochures in their offices, and they will advertise for you. Great PR.

Gentlemen,

Let's not forget one key benefit of this...through your application, you are gathering information on the interests, values, academic history, service history, etc. of a huge number of prospective members.

Before you even begin the formal rush process, you will have more names of people whose high school careers are consistent with the values of Lambda Chi Alpha, opportunities that we can offer to a new member and what skills/advantages that the new member can bring to us.

With a little bit of effort on a chapter's part, they can get a large number of prospective members who we can then go out and "contact recruit".

Eric

Something I should point out is that Northwestern, like many private schools, doesn't allow for freshman recruiting until the Winter Quarter (i.e. after Jan. 1). This is okay w/the administration at the University, so it's a very valuable tool.
