Kalpana Chawla
The latest issue of Glamour mentioned Kalpana Chawla in the editor's column, and they included a quote from someone only identified as her sorority sister. Does anyone know what sorority Chawla was a member of?
thanks! |
I'm not sure; Laurel Clark (the other female astronaut) was a member of Gamma Phi Beta, though.

According to the NASA website, she got her Bacherlor's degree from Punjab Engineering College in India. She then went on to graduate from the University of Texas at Arlington for her master's degree in 1984. Then she graduated from the University of Colorado with her doctorate in 1988. If she got her undergrad degree in India, it's unlikely that she was a collegiate sorority member. Perhaps she was in a professional engineering GLO or was an honorary member of a Southeast Asian sorority such as Delta Phi Omega (http://www.deltaphiomega.org/index.asp)?

I looked up Dr. Chawla's listing in my copy of The University of Texas at Arlington's alumni directory. She was not involved in any greek organizations while at UTA.

OK, this is embarrassing, but the problem is that I just can't read. I could blame the writer for not smoothly transitioning from talking about one woman to the other, but, yeah.
I should work on this literacy thing. |
