Problems as a Student Supervisor

Hi GCers,

I have been having a problem lately with some of the students that I supervise at my job. I work at one of the cafeteria's on my campus. About six of the students that I supervise are really lazy and do not want to work and whenever I ask them to do something they get an attitude and want to call me a "B". An incident that happened today was one student who was suppose to be working in the dinning area was standing near the ice cream machine looking at a magazine. I took the magazine off the counter after she left to go check on the ketchup machine. Then when she came back she told another student worker that I was a "B" for taking the magazine which was not even her's it was one of the cook's magazines. I could have written her up, no all I did was take the magazine and I did not even say anything to her.

I feel like they don't respect me as a supervisor and I feel as though I should not have to tell young adults who are in their 20's how to work. By now they should have some kind of work ethics.

I don't know what should I do, I've talked with the managers about this? And they just said to keep doing what I'm doing.

Maybe write them up. Sure, the "b" word might get thrown at you again, but you have handled their childish namecalling thus far. If they receive the write-up with the threat of losing their jobs, maybe they will start acting correctly. After all, being able to slack off at work is not worth being broke over!

You sound like a good boss with a hard job. Good luck! :D
