ebay

Ok does it bother anyone else that people outside our organization can buy our badge on Ebay? It really does me, I didn't join this great sorority so that others can have our badge. Let me know.....

I don't like seeing our badge or anyone else on ebay, but there isn't much that we can do, other than set up a fund to buy them back. I know that sometimes sisters disaffil and sell but I think that a majority of us will agree that most of the badges we see on ebay are either estate sells or lost badges. I wish that we still had the practice of engraving our names or numbers on them. I think that would put ownership other than initation.

I just want to know who is Msgulfcoast, whoever this is, is doing awesome job of buying badges up. I just hope that they are working for us, not against us. So if you are Msguldcoast please speak up!!!

Like Erin said, there isn't a whole lot that you can do about badges ending up on Ebay, other than educate, educate, educate. Lets make sure that our sisters know that when they pass on, their badge is either returned to the Fraternity or buried with them. Lets make sure that we fill out the Badge Disposition Form and that our families know what our wishes are regarding our Badge.

That having been said, I'm going to be controversial now but hear me out. I don't know if I want our alumnae pooling their money to save badges on Ebay. First, Ebay only sells a small fraction of the Alpha Gam badges on the market, so unless we get a national team of women scouring estate sales and pawn shops every week badges will still be out on the market. Second, I personally would rather see all the money spent saving badges go to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation where it can do some real good.

I love the badge and I love the fourteen pearls. But if you ask me, Alpha Gamma Delta is about more than a gold pin on your chest. It is about our traditions and ideals. It is about living our Purpose. That's what we should be focusing on.

There are many other truly important issues that we also need to be discussing as a Fraternity and as part of the NPC. Lets not get so bogged down on this one issue that we end up missing the forest for the trees.

Just my 19.04. :)

I agree that there are many other ways we can spend money, and that it isn't the fact that you wear that AGD, that it is the meaning behind that beautifully gold nugget. I just don't like seeing it traded so openly.

I would also like to have the ablity to pass on my badge to my daughter or niece. But we are either buried with or we return... oh well..

Does anyone know what they do with the returned badges? I mean now that we don't have engravings or numbers placed on them, do they just end up in a pile some place? Or are they redistributed... I think that would be really cool, I would love to have a badge with history.

Also, are there any chapters that still engrave their badges?

I loved the 19.04, better than .2 cents.

i'll be having mine engraved at convention. as for badges being redistributed - you can get ahold of IHQ and request one - you pay the same price as a new badge and they clean it up for you. i've got the badge of one of the founding sisters in Alpha kappa chapter (1945/46) as my "something old" for my wedding this summer.

Marissa, what a great idea!! I'm going to pass on that information to girls - I had no idea you could contact IHQ and request a "lost" or "forgotten" badge.

Hope you all have a great day!

it hurts me to see that just anyone can have our badge - these people have no idea what the badge stands for and its irritating! At the same time though, I agree that its too large of an undertaking for just a few people to do - we must educate EVERYONE about this and hope that in the coming years we won't see them on Ebay at all.

Speaking of weddings - I wore my original initiation dress when I got married, had red and buff roses and then pinned my badge on my bouqet's ribbon. Yeah I'm a nerd I know :) My maid of honor was even my Sis Mom!

There is a KKG bidding on an AGD badge. The badge has diamonds on each corner and is from Gamma Alpha (U. Ga). The bidding is at $152 now.

AGDZO Susan 03-01-2003 06:57 PM

What's the Kappa's id so we know if we need to outbid her?

GtownGirl98 03-01-2003 08:12 PM

Why does she want it, is my question?

winnieb 03-02-2003 04:40 PM

What is with the 3 diamonds on the badge?

--about weddings-- my dearest friend, friends since elementary school--also and Alpha Gam-- wore my badge in the krenolin (sp?) of her wedding dress for her "something borrowed"

The badge is gone so I guess the bidding closed??

BTW, that AGD silver tray?? How do we know it is an Alpha Gamma Delta tray? It could be a real person's monogram.

BTW2, Georgia now has AG_ as part of the license plae series being issued. Don't think I've seen an AGD yet.

I don't think the 3 diamonds has any significance. I think it's just a "style" -- kind of like the tiffany diamond one.

I had 2 maids of honor... one was a childhood friend and the other an Alpha Gam. Since I was without my own badge (had lost it at a funeral I attended earlier in the year somewhere between the car and the service site), she allowed me to "borrow" hers for my wedding day. I made all of my sisters (9 out of the 10 bridesmaids were Alpha Gams) cry when she tried to find a place to pin it out of sight, and I told her to pin it on the outside where everyone can see it -- right over my heart :)

Mai

My chapter used the one with the single diamond in the middle as a "gift" to the person who was voted outstanding new member. The person didn't know that they were voted. They paid for thier badge of choice like normal and then was surprized at initiation with the upgrade.
