Internet at work!!!!
I had a bad week at work--- I lost my internet access!!! Totally lost it, as in my boss took it away!!! And it wasn't even my fault.
The only people at my office who are suppose to have internet are senior managment and the computer guy. Well the computer guy and I are good friends, so he added internet access to my PC, also left on the games when he had to remove them from everyone else. I have had internet for a year, without a problem. One of my coworkers saw it on my computer--she KNEW to keep her damned mouth shut about it, which she did. I worked half a day one day this week--get into the office and I have an email from my boss telling me she was not sure how internet got onto my computer but she was having it removed, as it was not fair for me to have it and no one else. Turns out my coworker that knew I had access wanted to book a trip online--so she used my computer!!! She was sitting there online and my boss walked up. She never thought to minimize the screen. So because of my coworkers thoughtlessness I lost my internet access. And to top it off--she is the one who is pissed about it. Not me pissed at her, irritated yes-pissed no. She is pissed that the boss for not letting us have access--and shot the boss a nasty email calling the company and its policies old and dinosaur like. Ughhhh--- while I couldn't get Gc at work, I could read the newspaper, access home email--all the other stuff I do on a regular basis!!! Not anymore!@!!! :( -wendi |
I know what you mean!!!
:( We are not allowed either except for "official" reasons. I do check the local newspaper, and CNN headlines. I can understand not being able to spend a lot of time on the web when you are supposed to be working..but what about all the time spent waiting for someone to get back to you -- either on the phone, email reply or walking over to your desk. But I wish that we could be allowed to check our personal email, such as yahoo. Unfortunately, that could bring in spam/virsuses?/. But it is sooooo frustrating when I need to find out if I got a certain reply before I waste time going home or somewhere else and then find out I didn't have to..or if a decision has to be made during working hours. It would be nice if we could check our emails say, 12-1 and right before we leave for the day. Unfortunately, at my company, the policy will NEVER change. |
I am in sort of the same boat... Our internet will be down for the next 2 or so weeks. Company is between ISP's. I'm going to have to get some really good games for my PDA.

That sucks. :(
I've always had internet access at work - the benefits of working in IT ;) I never read GC at work, though... I would never get any work done if I did :p |
I'm frequently on the net at work...I take all my breaks at my desk, but I still do work while on "break," so every so often, I'll read a news story on MSN or check my home e-mail for 5 minutes. It helps keep me sane. At lunch, I'll take a half hour or so and come here or check out some other "fun" sites. Lately I've been doing a lot of research on the net and the pages load sooooo slowly, so while I'm waiting, I'll read some news or write an e-mail and then go right back to the research. I still manage to get all my work done either on time or early, and my performance doesn't suffer. In fact, it's probably better than it would be if I worked 8 hours straight and didn't give my brain a break.
Someone recently did a study about internet usage at work, and they found that, while employees with unrestricted net access do spend more time surfing for personal reasons at work, they also take more work home and end up more productive in the long run. I fully believe that if you let people work at their own pace - even if they have to take a few breaks during the day - if they're performing at or above their expected level and getting everything done on time, who cares if they're looking at CNN.com a few times a day? Porn, gambling, etc. is an entirely different matter, but I don't see that surfing the web occasionally is any worse than the people who take 5 smoke breaks a day. |
If I didn't have the 'net at work, I would go crazy! This computer is spoiling me though.....it's so fast!
I do find that sometimes I spend waayy too much time doing things. My balance is that I say, "Ok, I'm going to work for 1/2 an hour straight, then read interesting threads on one forum." :D |
