happy and not with rush

I'm happy that my house has seven pledges and still growing- it's our biggest class ever (we're only three years old, so it's a big deal). They're all wicked quality guys, good grades, honors students some of them- the perfect class.

I'm NOT happy that we have the biggest class on campus. That may seem a silly thing to be unhappy about- but normally, we have some big chapters. Last spring, DU had 14 pledges and SigEp had something like 12. This semester DU has I think 3 and SigEp has 6. SigEp got so few pledges last fall and this spring that they're in danger of losing their house.

How do you convince other chapters to change their rush methods? Everyone else does the old fashioned thing- dorm storm (which isn't allowed anymore, and just results in pissed off house masters), flyer everything, have parties and sit back and wait. It's completely stopped working for them, because people don't automatically come here wanting to go Greek anymore- usually quite the opposite. They need to switch to a more personal approach- all our pledges are people we know from the dorms or clubs or something, people we knew before. Our pledges classes have been larger every semester for the last five in a row, so it definitely works.

So how do you convince people who are stuck in the past?

A heartfelt appeal to the IFC. Maybe. It might get you laughed at, but at least you can say you tried.

They have national consultants and reps that are supposed to pick up on and tell them things like that...if they're not, or if the consultants are telling them and they're not paying attention, well, it's their own funeral. They probably at this point don't want to admit what you are doing is better than what they are doing. Hubris is stupid.

that is an interesting point- since we don't have a national, I often forget that other people DO. Huh.

Fraternities usually do not teach their chapters how to recruit. It's something we do to survive -- so we learn:D

If you keep succeeding in recruitment the others will follow eventually. Educate through IFC as to what the most effective methods are.
