Cordless Phone - House

We have 2 different models of cordless phones in our house, but the reception is totally crappy!

I wish I could talk hubby into ditching the reg. phone and just use our cell phones for all calls.

Any suggestions on not-so-expensive cordless phones? We don't get/make a lot of phone calls. Georgia has a no-call marketer's list that is terrific!!

Hubby's bday is next month and I need ideas...he went out and bought some extra Rio memory ((which he had on his wish list!))

Thanks!
Lynn

Hey Lynn!
I have a Sony cordless phone and it gets very good reception. I have had a Panasonic cordless phone in the past and was to say it mildly it was awfull. My suggestion is to go to Best Buy and ask them what they have.

I sell cordless phones and actually I'll differ with you on that one. According to most of the consumer data I've looked at Panasonic phones are some of the best around. In my personal experience they are great phones. Yes, you have an occasional lemon but generally speaking they're good.

Cordless phones are like most electronics. You get what you pay for. At Radioshack they sell cordless phones for around $15. You can also spend $200 on a good Panasonic. My favorites are the phones that have the built in speakerphone on the handset -- VERY useful.

I don't have a home phone but when I did I had a Panisonic and it worked well for me. Oddly enough my family now has 5 coordless phones and all are different brands. But mine lasted the longest.

So if you cannot afford to just ditch your home phone and use a cell phone...then I'd try a Panisonic.

Thanks!

Interestingly, I had called my brother and left a msg. on his ans. machine to see what kind of phone they have..

HE SENDS ME AN EMAIL to tell me to buy a Sony at Best Buys!! (And it wasn't even long distance, lol.)

I think I had Sony and/or Pan. before. I don't remember being overly pleased with cordless -es I had in the past but I'll keep an open mind. . I'll start looking when hubby isn't around.

Thanks, y'all!!

Sony doesn't make cordless phones anymore. If you see Sony on a cordless phone at a store it's either old or made by someone that's licensing the name... They weren't that great to begin with. Over twice the defective rate of other cordlesses.

We've had really good luck/service with vTech cordless phone. They're reasonably priced and work pretty well. Great sound quality and battery life. The only downside is that they're a little clunky.

One caveat about the Panasonic phones: They have a terrible battery life. You can't leave them off the charger for too long before they start chirping that they're dying. My aunt has one (one of the 2.4 ghz models) that starts to die after about an hour - it kinda defeats the purpose of the cordless phone if you have to keep it on its charger all the time.

Maybe you can tell I work at Radioshack?:D

With rechargable batteries you'll find a variety of performances. Almost any cordless phone you get these days is built to work with around 20 something hours of standby. Even the cheapest ones. That'll usually translate into about a day or two of solid use.

With Nickel Cadmium batteries it's important that you start them out right. You'll want to charge them all the way up when you first get them and then let them drain all the way down as soon as possible. Do that around once a month and you'll preserve the intended battery life.

If the battery life on a cordless phone is only a few minutes or hours than you need a new battery.

You also might want to consider a cordless phone that has 'spread spectrum' technology. Basically, the phone selects the frequency where it transmits and receives, and it never is the same one; this keeps people with scanners from overhearing your conversation. May cost a little more, but it's worth it.

GC is soooo educational!

Thanks!!

I ended up buying a Panasonic something or other. I'll tell you later how it works or if I take it back!;) :D
