I can't afford this, not right now.
well i just lost my job today....when i started a couple months ago, i mentioned to someone that i eventually want to end up back on the east coast closer to where i grew up but that i knew id be here for AT LEAST another year and a half to two years, if not more... well they 'want someone they can invest their money in' and 'spend time on' and whatever, so theyre since i could possibly be gone in a year and a half, theyre letting me go now. how shitty is that???

I am in the same boat sort of in that my husband will be done with grad school in three years and then I will be on the other coast...so I have NOT told my employer that I have absolutely no intentions of being there after three years. They will find that out when it is time to move! I am sorry that happened to you, but sometimes, especially when it comes to work, your boss and coworkers should be on a need to know basis and if you don't plan on staying long, that is something they don't need to know :(

What a cop-out! Sounds like a pretty poor excuse to me. I'm so sorry.
But, this may now open you up to your dream job, or at least a better opportunity. You know that old saying, when one door closes, another opens. At least, it better, cuz I'm also unemployed and need to find a job. :D |

I am in a similar boat. I just started a full-time job a few weeks ago. When hired they told me it would be a year to year and a half assignment, then they would have no use for the position. Since I am moving out of town in 4 - 5 months (which they don't know about) I told them it wouldn't be a problem, that I didn't mind that the position would be ending within two years. I felt horrible, but I REALLY need the money. I sometimes think of how to give them my 2 weeks notice, but I have no idea what excuse to use. I was thinking of just saying "personal reasons" but then they ask questions, ya know? Anyway, enough about that. |
Amy, I totally feel ya! I lost my job a couple months ago due to a miscommunication from a coworker of mine.
I was pretty devestated, especially since it really wasn't my fault. However, I took a month to relax and be a bum. Now, I have a high paced job that I guess I enjoy. It weird from going to a "grown up job" to working as a restaurant hostess. But, I'm a college student so it's okay. I had to convince myself that it was okay to work in a restaurant. It was a little hard for me to adjust, but I'm survivin!! I know you will too! Ivory |

Never, NEVER tell a boss or potential boss you won't be there FOR-EV-ER!!! You have to look at it from their side. It DOES cost money every time a new employee is brought aboard. For us, we lose on production becase we have to train and train and train... Personally, I'm sick of it and am looking for someone who is settled, either grown kids or actually NEEDS the money. I really am so sorry it happened to you, but alot of offices are very competative. bucutie had a LOOOOONG thread last year on some inner problems. Even to tell a co-worker is dangerous if thy have a friend who needs a job. The only payoff for being honest, is a pretty darn good ref. While I'm at it, never walk out on a job, you will get KILLED (forget what's legal-there are a ZILLION ways around that.) when they call the last employer. Good luck...sorry it came at a bad time, but then, is there ever a good time??? |

At the very least, they shold give you 2 weeks pay AND any paid vacation time you have earned. Don't forget their "sick days" policy. Also, if you were fired after a certain amount of time working there-not sure, but is it 6 months?-you can file for unemployment. In La. I've never heard of anyone NOT getting unemployment unless they were let go within the grace/training period. Good luck to you...I've been fired before! :D |
@ DigitalAngel, I would hesitate to put that job on your next application or resume, especially if you only worked there for a short period of time. People CLAIM they'll hire you if you were fired from another job, but I don't believe it. I've been terminated a few years back, and everytime I admit to it while applying I'm never hired!
@ Hootie, I was told that the law varies from state to state. In my state any employer can discharge any employee at any time for any reason. @ JAM, I never would've thought :eek::D |
Yes-laws do vary state to state--- most states are "at-will" work states--you can quit or be fired without notice--this is usually the case unless you are a contracted employee.
As far as unemployment--try it... Everyone I know who has applied for it gets it--although i know my company fights it everytime~~they are jerks about it. Usually you can get unemployment unless you were fired for gross misconduct. And as far as getting another job after getting fired-- ask them, since they are willing give you a reference, if they agree to consider your termination (as far as other employers are concerned) a resignation. BUT-- make sure that is only with other employers-- you cannot get unemployment for resigning. Make sure to be very clear with them. Good luck-- I can honestly say (and I never admit this) I was fired from my old job--my old boss was a dick!!! We had personality issues--he didn't have one :) --seriously-- he wrote me a bad review, i asked -in writing-for a follow up in 6 weeks, he told me okay-at 6 weeks he told me that things were great and he would get that written up in my review--the next day told me let's go to hr to write up the follow up on my review--he fired me!!! He told me is was poor performance, but asked me to stay 6 more weeks--- the vp of hr knew we had issues--i asked why would you want someone who did shitty work to stay for 6 more weeks--hr manager agreed something was not right-- told me i could go home--he would get me a check for 3 months pay plus sick and vaca days. also agreed to pay for a headhunter, and agreed that my employment record would reflect i resigned and they not fight unemployment. also agreed to still pay for reimbursement for my mba, that i was 1 month from finishing. I am so sorry this happened to you---talk with the company--see what they are willing to compensate you with. -wendi |
