what do these people do on movies?

The reason why i ask . . is that I thought they were basically the financiers of the movie . . . however, for some movies I'll see like a whole bunch of Executive producers . . . do they all contribute or is just giving a free resume credit?

Executive producers are usually the people that work for the studio.

For example:
Let's say Jane Smith is development executive and Joe Jones is production executive at New Line. Michael Miller is President of new line.

New Line produces and releases movie Pandapalooza.

Jane Smith brought the script for Pandapalooza into the studio, presented it to production.

Production (Joe, Michael) gave it a green light.

Joe Jones oversaw production for studio.

therefore Michael Miller, Jane and Joe are executive producers. Studio is the financier.

In the case of independent films, its a totally different ballgame.

Yes the list can be really long. Depending on how many studio people had a hand in it or if it was a co-production between 2 studios.

Associate producers usually people that work for production company/director. Like the directors assistant, if unusually helpful can get elevated to assoc producer during production, or director's development person would be assoc producer.

Weinsteins, as heads of Miramax, get exec producer credit on every Miramax movie.

don't know, but that's what i want to eventually work up to. they are the ones who earn a lot of money so i want to do that.
