Columbia tragedy: Gamma Phi
Laurel Clark, one of the astronauts on board the shuttle Columbia, was a member of Gamma Phi Beta at the University of Wisconsin. Her sorority affiliation was specifically mentioned in an article in this morning's (2/2) Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Thank you for the post AGD alum....
....I had a feeling she might be, since the only article I read about her in the afternath of the explosion indicated she graduated from UWMadison and I thought, I wonder if she was a Gamma Phi Beta? The one article I read made no mention of it so I did not check any further -- so thanks for your post.
This tragedy has really made me very sad -- such a profound loss -- now the news that a sister has perished makes it even more heartbreaking..... ...tears are falling from our beloved crescent moon...:( |
Deepest condolences to Gamma Phi Beta on the loss of a beloved sister and a true role model.
My thoughts and prayers are with the astronauts, and the family and friends left behind. Triad love to all of you. |
Oh how sad. I don't remember seeing anything about her sorority affiliation in my local paper. My prayers are with you Gamma Phi sisters and friends. This is such a terrible loss.:(

It truly is a tragedy.
There was an article in the Badger Herald today about her, and although it doesn't mention her sorority, it does talk about how much she loved the University of Wisconsin: http://www.badgerherald.com/vnews/di.../3e3dec69421ac My thoughts are with her Gamma Phi sisters and her family. |
I read this thread right after reading an article on msn about her last email sent to family and friends. She mentions the "crescent moon" twice, which I find even more interesting after learning of her affiliation. I just thought I would share the article.

Aww...heartfelt condolences to the sisters of Gamma Phi Beta.

My deepest sympathies.:(
Truly a loss for Gamma Phi Beta and our country. |
Although I am sad to know that we lost another great sister this weekend, and the tragedy has just hit too close to home this time, I am extremely proud to know that one of my sisters had the honor of being on the Columbia shuttle in the first place. It makes me proud to know that my sisters, as well as numerous other Greeks, have risked their lives for the rest of humanity. I am so proud to be a Gamma Phi, a Greek, and I am so glad to show others that the stereotype that Greeks only think of themselves has been disproved once again. I pray for Laurel Clark's family and friends, as well as the other families and friends of the astronauts lost in the tragedy...

My condolences to the Gamma Phis. My two closest friends from high school are Gamma Phis and I have thought of them often since i read this. I was just wondering if Gamma Phis Nationals have organized any sort of rememberance. I know after 9/11 we lost a sister that was aboard one of the planes and nationals asked us to wear our blue and white ribbons for a week or so. Just curious as to how they are handling this. Best wishes to everyone.
