Need info
I am doing a persuasive speech in which I hope to persuade class members that sorority/fraternities are not bad. I want to touch on the good aspectsand refute many of the more common myths that people have about them. I spent my first 2 1/2 yrs of college at OSU main campus and have recently transferred to one of the branches for many reasons. While away at college my sorority, Sigma Alpha, was a big part of my life and I miss the whole atmosphere!! A lot oftudents here at the branch are here for two years and then transfer to main campus and I want to open their minds to the possibilities of Greek life. Can anyone point me in the right direction regarding history, facts, numbers, statistics, etc? I know a little bit, but not enough to give an informed speech!!! Thanks!!!!!!!!:)

It's rush right now at MSU and we give a little speech about the benefits of being a member of Sigma Alpha at each info session. Heres a little of what we state...
- Common interest, values, and standards upon which your organization was founded. - Sisterhood, meeting new people and networking with actives as well as alumni. - Leadership development, we compare our chapter to a small business with the budget, keeping a house, and reaching goals. - Career development, internships and job posting passed on from sister to sister. - Classes, rarely do I have a class without a sister in it. This is great for studying as well as to keep up in class with notes and attendance. - Lasting friendships and memories - Last and as a joke, we have to learn how to cook, this has been the biggest challenge for me, no house chef for the gamma chapter *sigh* |
boy can i help
i just wrote a research paper last semester abt a similar topic so i definatly have info for you. Here are a few basic facts to start out with they sound inpressive and are good for an intro:
85% of Fortune 500 Exec's we part of a frat or sorority 76% of U.S. Senators were in one or the other All but 2 U.S.Presidents since 1825 were part of a frat. There are TONS of myths surrounding Greek life and here are the facts behind a few: 1. Greek Organizations Promote Binge Drinking Each chapter has to abide by state federal and university policy regarding drugs and alcohol and almost all have risk maganagement officers/council, there are even programs such as 'Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol' I know personally that alot of the sororites at least on my campus have dry houses where no drinking at all is allowed and we have the Sober Sister plan too so no girl is tempted to drink and drive. 2. Hazing is an inescapable part of being in the greek system This is one of the most damaging myths. Greeks nationwide are taking a stand AGAINST hazing. Both IFC and Panhell have strict rules regarding hazing. On a personal note when i was initiated this fall we weren't hazed at all. 3. Greeks buy their friends Ask any greek and they'll tell you this ranks up there with one of the most annoying myths abt greek life. The fact is dues cover all the expenses an organization may incur throughout the year. Almost any organization on campus that a person can join is going to ask for dues, things aren't free and the money has to come from somewhere. That's alot and i hope it helps...on a side note you might want acknowledge that part of the responsibility for the bad rep of greeks has been due to the actions of a few. If you don't acknowledge at least part a little of that, people will probably disregard your entire speech. The Greek system isn't perfect but for the most part we're moving in the right direction. |

Great post. Now would anyone know the total number of those in fraternities and sororities? This number should include social, professional, & honor organizations. Also, if you know of the number for each type that would be great as well.
