I'm a new Alum.
Well, I'm now an Alumna of Phi Sigma Sigma.
Unfortunately, we do not have an Alum Chapter in the L.A. area. And I'm kinda lost now. I still want to hang out with my sisters, and go to Chapter events, but I feel like it's really not my place anymore. Do you have any suggestions for me? I had read the thread about the L.A. area NPC Alum, but I'm not sure how that works. Is it like a campus Panhel? Well any information that you may have would definately help. Thanks! Have you considered advising? This way, you have an excuse to attend chapter events. I'm not sure about Phi Sig's rules about advising, but you may want to look into it.
Also, you shouldn't feel like you can't still hang out with your chapter even though you're an alumna. They're still your friends and your sisters, and they probably miss you as much as you miss them! |

I am a Phi Sig alum also. I graduated in May 2002, so I guess you could consider me pretty new also! Anyway, I missed being an active so much, not only did I join the alum chapter in my area, I looked into becoming an advisor. So, I am the Risk Management Advisor for a Phi Sig chapter nearby. It's a really great time because you have the chance to share your Phi Sig knowledge with girls other than the ones in your chapter. On a side note, I found it difficult to attend functions of my own chapter simply because I was used to being in a position of authority, and as an alum, I had no voice in important matters. This might be different with your chapter, but it's something to be prepared about. Anyway, congrats on your alum status. I hope you remain active in Phi Sigma Sigma. Maybe you could contact your nationals and see if there are enough interested Phi Sig alumna in the area to start an alumna club!

don't exclude yourself
we just had a bunch of girls graduate after the fall semester...we absolutley miss all of them and we LOVE it when they come to events, and can find the time in their busy lives to stop by. Don't hesitate to ask your chapter for a calender. I know we would be very sad to think that our sister were afraid to come around. After all Once a Phi Sigma Sigma....

Definitely get involved with the NPC association in your area -- it is a great way to keep the greek ties alive -- I have found ALL of my alum Panhel experiences immensely rewarding and it is sometimes surprising to find out who is another sorority alum -- it is great for networking too, so for sure get involved! And since there is a chapter of your sorority in the area, being an advisor is another great suggestion -- your views and ideas are fresh and collegians can always use the assistance...and finally I have to echo the comments of breathesgelatin -- ask for a strip list of alums in your area -- shoot for all the cities/towns within a 45 minute radius and you may be surprised to learn there are decent numbers to start an alum chapter -- I did that myself here in 2000 and after our little Gamma Phi alum chapter got started, I started an alum Panhel association in 2001 that is now 100-strong! We have the best time and we are activiley involved with our community -- this year we are offering a scholarship to a local high school senior girl who will be going to a 4-year university, we collect stuffed animals for a local police dept who gives them to kids in crisis when they are investigating crimes and we donate our "gently-used" career clothes to a local organization that creates professional wardrobes for women coming off welfare and returning to work. It is a nice feeling to be able to give back to the community like this and I know you will find that to be the same in your area. Good luck and keep us all posted!

I just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions!!!
I'm considering getting involved with an Alum. group. And I definately want to be an advisor. The only thing is, that I'll feel a little weird advising sisters that will be older than myself, especially since I'm not going to be from their chapter. (we have a rule that you cannot advise at your chapter unless you've been alum for 4/5 years.) And since I am barely 21, a lot of sisters will be older, and may have problems receiving advise from me. Did that make any sense at all?? :D I think that I will speak with some of my old advisors and friends that hold higher positions, and see what the process is to become an advisor. All I know is that I want to remain active. I don't want to be one of those "oh, I use to be a..." Know what I mean? Well, thank you once again. Fraternally, Beth |
