New Member Activities

I am looking for some new member activities to pass on to my chapter. Some things that we would love are activities that help new members and sisters get to know all about one another and activities that help new members learn all about our wonderful history. Any suggestions?? :)

You can go to your library and check out any book on workshop activities. They'll probably have a whole section dedicated to ice breakers. Also check into a ropes course.

I also did new member training for 1 1/2 years (3 candidate classes). One thing that I did to encourage new members to learn history was a trivia game -- new members vs. old. I'd quiz them on chapter and national history. It's usually a pretty close game since the new kids are fresh off studying it and the brothers haven't seen it in awhile (but a few among us usually know more than others).

The chapter hasn't done it for awhile but I'd love to see them bring it back.

I'd second that recommendation. There are some good resources out there for team building activities that are great to get your group together. Some could be run prior to your meetings, others as stand alone events. Here are some websites for some of these sources:

www.pa.org
www.high5adventure.org
www.theadventuregroup.com

Also, just doing fun things together is good. Many chapters have events for their Big/Littles to get together and know each other better. Last couple of semesters we've done a dinner/movie event where we make small paddle keychains.

Some other ideas along the suggested quizes: do a jeapordy-style game on your GLO's history. Or do a bingo game that requires the new members to met the old members and get their signatures in specific boxes. The boxes could have questions like "I'm a biology major", which means they need to find the member who's a bio major to get their signature in that box.

Hope this helps

I'm also curious about membership activities. Even though we're a service sorority we take our sisterhood very seriously. We want to make sure the new girls feel welcome and included.

we do a lot of movie nights, pot luck stuff at the houses, go out for ice cream, etc......i was new member coordinator and i made sure to invite old girls to the meetings, too.....that way, we're not separated as "old" and "new" for too long. incorporate both groups as much as you can in their process.

the new new member coor. had the girls make a list of 10 things we didn't know about them and put a picture of them on it.....it's up right by the front door so everyone can see our new gals, learn stuff about them, and see how proud we are of them to show them off! :)

i don't know if you do a retreat or not, but we have our "new member retreat" about 2 wks after formal recruitment....it's just alpha gams and it's soooo much fun! make up agd songs to current songs, play silly games, and we each bring something significant to us and explain it (the emotional part of the night)....my favorite time of the year.

what a cute idea!!!

we also had sisterhood dinners in the cafe. we picked one night per week and people who could come, did. my favorite pledge activity was a marshmallow roast we did in our bbq! it was a nice relaxing way to get to know others!
