Chapter Website Hosting
My chapter is looking for a new host for our website. We are currently using Tripod, and getting it free. But there are too many pop-ups  and the URL is too complicated (can't remember it, etc.).
We looked into moving it to the school's server, but that means you can only edit on campus, have to use Lotus Notes, and can't copy and paste HTML into their program...yada, yada, yada. And since I live a half hour away from campus, I am not too fond of this idea. It doesn't sound like the best idea for what we are looking for.... SOOOO...What do other chapter webmaster use to host their websites??? We are looking for little to no popups. There will be pictures, graphics. We are looking into putting up a sisters only section. Here is our current page: http://oduzta.tripod.com/iotasigma/ Thanks in advance! :p Meredith |

There's either one popup on the page that you can shrink, or you have to integrate Y!/Geo ads into your page (which I'd hate more than popups). The main drawback is that I can't have a sisters-only section straight from Y!/Geo, but there are apparently sites online that can create "gateways" to a page on your site, so that it's password protected. Haven't actually used it yet, but I know that http://www.bravenet.com/ offers that kind of service. Best of luck to you! |
i know at my undergrad and grad school, the university reserved a certain amount of space on their server for clubs and organizations to set up websites. perhaps you would wamt to ask your system admin. or maybe activites director if there is an option of having your site on the college website.

http://www.enablehosting.com is VERY dependable and a delight to work with...not too sure about the price...since a guy from my school runs it, we get a great deal...but they are great!

Jon is a nice guy ( he is my boyfriend's roommate) and his rates are pretty awesome -- i believe he offers domain names as well -- they are 16 dollars and some change per year i think... on a side note -- my sorority's site is hosted by the school now, but they do not allow perl, php, java, etc on their servers so that is why we got an account with enable hosting... as for editing i just ftp the stuff to the sorority filespace using WSFTPLE i ftp to ftp.ncsu.edu so i wonder if you could use ftp.yourschooldomain.edu ? |

If you decide to go with the university as your host, there may be some scripts that you would have to manually setup/install.
You can always get a domain to point to your site's URL if you don't like the long address, but check with your university computer help desk to check if this is allowed. If you decide to go with another host, there are some pretty good FREE hosts out there :) With advertisements: Geocities: http://www.geocities.com Angelfire: http://www.angelfire.com Tripod: http://www.tripod.com Without ads (may have an alternative to ads): Brinkster: http://www.brinkster.com Cool Free Pages: http://www.coolfreepages.com Net Firms: http://www.netfirms.com These hosts usually come with password protected directories already and some other features. These are also just a few of the more popular ones. Hope this helps :) |
Hey, I created and currently run my chapter's website (ECU KD) and I use Hosting Matters. It's like 6bucks a month so nothing ridiculous. It has a great interface to work with and goes with Frontpage too. Anyway, feel free to pm me with more questions.

Good, cheap hosts are pretty easy to come by. PM me if you would like a recommendation.
If you get a domain name, I highly recommend that you purchase it yourself. Do NOT let your Web host purchase it for you. I have seen messy disputes over who actually owns the domain. A hostee tries to leave the host, but the host won't transfer the name rights to the hostee. It's better to have total ownership of the domain so that you can change hosts whenever you want. For domain registration/administration, I highly recommend GoDaddy Software: http://www.godaddy.com. |
Just a few comments from my point of view:

Summary: Do some research first on ANY company you want to do business with, especially online....and then ASK MANY MANY questions before signing up :) |
My chapter used Angelfire.

ETA: my chapter's website is at: www.geocities.com/aphi_sfsu (Alpha Phi at San Francisco State University) |
be careful with password protected areas. i have heard certain scripts and various 'free password script' sites are easily hacked into. of course, even the most protected page could probably be as well. so bottom line, don't put stuff on that site that could be detrimental if discovered.
BTW, not to pry, but what do chapters put on secret sites? i was thinking maybe a calendar, guestbook for sisters, and a phone list or something. but why bother with it? also check out www.caltheta.com for web hosting. |
I just took over doing our chapter website...its on tripod..and we have a sister only site...that includes: contact list, good & welfare section (same thing asa guestbook), a presidents section, meeting notes, etc
