what do you think....

Ok, sorry if this is ever been mentioned on here before, (but i'm in computer lab at school, and I didn't have that much time;) ) But I was hoping you all can help me with a little dilemma
First here is the background info: We are one of the two NPC sororities at my small commuter school. we have 7500 people here (mostly women) and 2 national sororities 1 national fraternity and millions of locals (not really like 5 sororities and 3 fraterinites) But we are the most dominant. (not to toot my own horn but woohoo) so anyway with being in our situation we sometimes get a lot of smack talking coming from the other NPC and some of the locals. (like they're not that cute, why are the always doing philantropy, and do they really have to sing in the quad...blah blah nothing important just normal gossip:rolleyes:
We are only the way we are because we strive to uphold the values of Phi Sig ;)
So here is where I'm at:
I was talking to a Panhellnic member last night and she found out (once a again gossip) that the other NPC is now "informing" people that they set higher standards then us on letting in women and the whole quailty or quanity issue. I know they are free to say what they please but it bothers me because it isn't true!!! I know everyone has there view on other groups but lets just say they have no greek love at all. the problem with our panhellnic is since there are only two chapters on it, one is always covering for the other while the other is trying to find ways to get the other in trouble(you wouldn't beleive some of the stuff over the years). I don't know why but they do not like formal recruitment. well, I do know why, we always take quota and they take maybe 2 or 3 every time. (quota was 11 this time in case you were wondering) XYZ gets mad because they feel we take women just to be "the biggest" (we currently have 31 members; total is 35) anyway every fall all you see is us out in the quad, passing out flyers, and running the panhellnic booth (looking like chickens with our heads cut off). most women said they didnt even know we did recruitment with XYZ until they went to orientation.
Then the week after formal recruit XYZ is out with a full blown COB week. Which is good for them because we want to see them shine too, but its always a lil shady that they didn't help with formal. But Whatever, right well, so hopefully this spring we are going to have National Panhellnic Officers come down to talk to our Panhellnic. I am hoping then both sororities will have a fourum with the officers.
BTW, you should see the rumble each spring about raising total. (one of the locals is a branch off XYZ and they are doing really well. There numbers are right up there with us, and they are invloved in student government and they put on some decent Philanthropies. We actually want them to associate with Panhellnic but it wouldn't happen for two reasons: they don't like rules (they secretly haze) and XYZ hates them (the whole branch off deal)
So basically what I want to happen is I want to resovle the drama. I want to do like a rose and thorn type deal with them. But do you think it would fly? I would really want it to be speak your mind. I mean they think all this obsurd stuff about us, so I'd want to hear it. But I know the problem with it too, we are women and sometimes women are just plain mean. so what if it backfires. or no one does says what they are really feeling. I try to be like "model" sorority girl and talk to them, donate to there philanthropies, hang out with them at events they are at, and you know but it sucks when you get cold faces in return (and I get all hurt and turn into not so model sorority girl--not publicly) I want to have faith in the Panhellnic council in sceduling something but... they haven't met since like november (big no no I know; the vp is working on it) and I really don't think they will. But there is no way I can step on there toes. So for now I am going to just make the rose and thorn suggestion to my panhellnic delegate (chain of command) and see what happens. Also we have something new on our campus called GLU (greek Life United-- get it like "glue"- holds all the greeks together) but they haven't done any thing bonding wise. all they put on is Greek Week. (basically what I am trying to say is our campus unity is ok but lacks any major connection between the greeks)
But I thought of some cool ideas for them too. (like fun all greek activities to do) so I'm gonna present them to my rep. So sorry for the really long post but does anyone have any other adivce they can give? do you think I'm doing ok by suggesting? Thanks a million

Hey Heather,

hey no prob, long posts are great...Just hang in there..having a Panhel officer down will help you out...You are not the only ones with this problem...my chapter hasn't had a panhellenic on campus for 5 yrs or so...the other group didn't want to do formal and everyone felt it was a waste of time to have meetings(that was when i was newly initiated)...
I know another campus that is just Phi Sig and another group and they have problems too (although i only know sisters from the other group and it was Phi SIg supposedly causing them...but they got help)...

Ok, i don't have any suggestions right now because i'm tired and shouldn't be on the pooter, but I encourage you to work at it and i'll re-post or PM you when i'm awake...

Hey Heather - honestly as an active member, let your chapter advisor, or Panhellenic representative worry about all the BS. Just go about what you feel... gung ho phi sig, that is great, but don't get involved. I don't know if you have a greek advisor on campus since your community is small. But you know there are many Phi Sig chapters out there having the same problems. ; ) Hang in there & I wish you & your chapter the best!

Hey! we definately have exactly the same issues here at my school. But when the NPC officer came down she was an alumni and recent advisor for the other sorority?! How unfair is that?!
OUr solution has come in the form of the New NPC recruitment styles, we're going for partially structured so that means we only have to host one event with the other org and then we can do what we want, up to five additional parties. This way they have to work to get what they want instead of just getting us to recruit girls and getting to take half of them!
Ask the NPC officer about changing your recruitment style, the formally structured style rarely works very well on a small campus from what I have heard.
