should i be scared of circle the fat?
hi,
i'm wondering about rush, which starts this week, maybe someone can help? i heard that a lot of sororities here do circle the fat or have fraternities weigh them in their underwear and yell out the numbers, which i'm not thrilled about, but i guess i can see how it would work out all right in the end. i'm not afraid to pledge or anything, but did anyone else go through weight-related pledge activities? thanks!!! |
Sweetysister -
rest assured that 99.999% of stories like this are urban legend. I have never heard of a sorority doing something like this, and if they did, they would NOT be a group you would want to be a part of, I'm sure!!! I can't say that this doesn't happen anywhere, because, well, I haven't been to every sorority at ever college campus in North America. But I assure you that this should not be something you worry about during recruitment! |
I agree with Ginger.

Honestly, if they told you to circle your fat would you? I'd say go to hell, no respectable woman would go through that kind of humiliation and degration.
Give rush a shot, I'm sure you'll find the house where you belond |
There is certainly nothing "all right" about circling fat and having fraternity brothers seeing you in your underwear and humiliating you.
Pledging and new member education does not equal hazing and "circling the fat" does not prove how much you want to be part of a sisterhood. That being said, I wish you the best of luck in rush. |
I'd be scared only if you're fat.
-Rudey --And wear nice underwear please. |

sweetysister,
It is my opinion that you should not be scared of going through rush. Rush is a wonderful experience in which you can meet new people. If you do end up in a sisterhood that 'circles fat' i would turn them in to the Greek Advisor or whoever takes care of that on your school. Regardless if the chapter is national or local, that is NOT what sisterhood is about. Hazing has no place in sisterhood. |
This is a form of hazing (if it is even done!) SO - be sure you know who to talk to in Student Activties. Personally, I agree with an earlier post that this is an urban legend/wild rumor.

 Looking at sweetysister's other post in which she gives us a hyperlink to a book about secret societies, especially Skull and Bones...why do I get the feeling she wants one of us to say, "Oh, yes! My sorority, Alpha Beta, circles the fat! It's for the pledges' own good!"

i actually saw a show once about a girl who really wanted to be in a sorority. i think it was called "dying to belong" where they were actually circling fat and making fun of everyone's body parts who were on the table. did anyone see this show too? it was a long time ago.
