State of the Nation
 

Last night, while driving to a hick town, I saw a truck sporting that South Carolina flag and marked on the truck window was "Gore Give Up!" As I continued to drive, I gave much thought to the hand written message. Sadly, I think the time has come. Gore fought a good fight but I think he should concede at this point.

Unfortunately I have to agree about this. This is a lose/lose situation for Gore.

Unfortunately I have to agree. I think we have to let it go, so that we can just hopefully get over the next terrible 4 years and get his (Bush) sorry ass out of office!!

I must mournfully agree! I think that we should all remain prayerful that the next four years will allow us to continue to strive economically and socially. I hope that the foundation of today's economy can withstand whatever damages may come out of the bushes. I feel that Gore is only making his case weaker at this point.

I have to respectfully disagree w/ the majority of opinions on this thread. A LOT can happen in four years--wars have been won and lost in less time, economies could crash, not to mention far-reaching legislation and Supreme Court appointments. I think that there is enough time to challenge the election and still be able to smoothly transition administrations.

I don't hink that Gore should concede just yet, because this is still up in the air until the Supreme Court weighs in on the subject. I think that the "powers that be" decided long ago who the winner of this election would be and so here we are and Bush is are winner. But Gore, if he is to be consistent, should not concede until after the Supreme Court decision.

On the other hand I think that Gore should not contest this anymore. I think that he just needs to let Bush get about his business of delivering this country to hell.

One positive note to this whole sordid mess is that 90% of registered black voters turned out for the election. That is a very positive step in the right direction.

I also disagree with the majority opinion of this thread. Gore should definetely not concede. I believe that if the shoe was on the other foot the GOP would ask for re-counts---every vote should count and our vote is our only voice in this democracy. I am glad to see him taking these measures- this simply shows America not that he is a sore loser but that he is not passive but persistent to get policies enacted to benifit all Americans. You would think that an oppenent would agree to the re-counts (if their hands weren't sticky) but then again he's a Bush. I can only imagine what will happen "if" Bush is the next president.

Don't get me wrong I don't want to see Gore concede. I am glad that he is pushing this to the limit with the "crap" that has gone on in Florida. But with this being Florida, and a Bush being the gov. of Florida. I don't see how Gore can do it. They are to shady down there. If Bush becomes president, the state of the nation is going to be pure Shi*. Sorry for that, but that is how I was feeling.

I too still believe that Gore should keep fighting for his rights, as well as the right's of thousands of people in Florida, overseas, and around the nation.

I respectfully feel that this is why blacks don't get alot from this country, because we give up when adversity hits hard. WE NEED TO FIGHT!!!! What if our relatives would have given up in the 50's and 60's, held their heads down and said, "man, they aren't going to let us vote no matter what we do". That fight lasted for years. Gore needs to fight it all the way.

What many people don't realize is that the canges that Bush makes during his 4 years in office will affect the entire country for years to come. We are just now getting over Reganomics, and what Bush will do will be far worse than Regan could have ever imagined.

Remember, Rowe v. Wade passed by only one vote get rid of that one voter and you get rid of legal abortion for a lot longer than 4 years.

As usual Gore and the democrats are sore losers. At least the rest of the country won't lose also by having Gore president

Professor, I hope you don't really believe that. First, why would any candidate give up in the midst of all this controversy. Consider the amount and the nature of the controversy. First, the governor's brother is in charge of the key state. Second, many analysts thought it may come down to the state of Florida's electoral votes. The Secretary of State had within her power to organize this election months before it ocurred, but didn't(or did she?). In planning it, SOMEONE should've ran a test on the ballots they planned to use. Had they done so, they would've discovered such POSSIBLE problems IN ADVANCE; then, it could've been avoided with a differently designed ballot. Thirdly, the Department of Justice had received complaints about people being impeded from voting, in addition to ballots being lost, stolen, or strayed; and yet they DID NOTHING. Since the Secretary of State is a republican(as well as the governor), that seems to suggest a CONFLICT OF INTEREST; therfore the Department of Justice should have launched an investigation, and referred it to the Florida Supreme Court, or the U.S. Supreme Court.
Whenever you have the precinct workers complaining that they themselves had to choose who THEY BELIEVED was registered, and stating this on C-Span, that is reason enough to revisit the idea of doing it all over again in Florida. The people complaining are from ALL walks of life, yet all are Americans.

To give up would confirm what so many Americans believe today; that their vote DOESN'T COUNT ANYWAY.
