Effective Dorm Storming
What works at your school in terms of dorm storming? Do you just grap as many people as possibie and take themto the event or do you spend time in their rooms talking to them about the fraternity? What else do you do to get peole to come out?

Re: Effective Dorm Storming
Stay and talk with them as long as possible... Just running through rooms, "blah blah blah our fraternity... blah blah" simply serves to annoy people.
You have to get people to really understand what fraternity is, and that you really care about answering their questions, etc. You have to spend time with them. Recruit. -- 1. First draw out a floor plan of the dorm and each floor in it. 2. Make a "dorm storm form" which has fields for: "dorm name" and "floor." then have seperate sections for each room (Mine have 3 sections) (3 sections= 3 rooms). Each one of these sections should have the following fields: "Room #" "Extension" "Name" "Cell Phone" "Email" "Notes on this person" (ie: "very interested, or "Doesn't want anything to do with "frats'). "Roomate name" "Cell", "Email", "Notes on roomate" 3. Take a team of 4 brothers (you can have multiple teams), each brother has a certain position. "note taker" Takes notes on the dorm storm forms, gathers all information. Pick someone quiet, and very organized: this person hardly ever talks, never comes in the room, he just stands out side and takes notes and jots down important info. "talker 1" "talker 2" These people do all the talking, ask for the phone numbers explain things, etc. these people should be really outgoing. The fourth person is there for supervision. He carries rush schedules to hand out and makes sure the brothers are going to all the rooms in order. After you're done with a floor all the information should be compiled into an MS Access database. Floors that have been covered should be noted in red on the floor plans you made in step one. These should be placed on a wall in the house so that brothers dont do floors twice... In addition, all rooms in which no one was home should be made note of in green on the floor plans. This is how I do things, its worked pretty well. -Tony Quote:

Pi Kap 142, I was under the impression that we (fraternities and Sororities) were not allowed to be in the dorms during move in day...... or leave fliers in their doors..... could be a rumor... but...
|
i believe that would depend on the school's rules.

Just because we are specificly not allowed to do anything during move in day does not mean we cannot do stuff later and we usually have brothers living in the dorms that help out a lot.

Were not allowed in any way, shape, or form to storm the dorm at my school (I rhymed! Woo!)
We arent even allowed to stuff mailboxes :( |
Archangel's post on the details of dormstorming is fantastic. For those (primarily guys) who can dormstorm, do it just like this. The record-keeping system is precise and accurate, and will certainly be a great first-step in keeping track of all of your potential new members.

Pi Kapp142,
I am an alum of SFSU and we never allowed to distribute flyers in the dorms or slip any under the doors. Of course, you didn't hear it from me, but on the first week of school, every student's names are on their doors and it would be really easy to just have brothers who live in the dorms slip flyers under the doors with guy's names on them at night... ;) Also, we would just ask any sister who lived in the dorms to post an info flyer on their door so anyone who wanted info would be able to read them. I don't know how things are now, but every fraternity and sorority would table by the dorms on move in day. There's no harm in rushing outside of the dorms. We would help girls move in and it's a good way to meet their parents and introduce them to Greek Life with a flyer designed specifically for them. Good Luck! :D |
we aren't allowed to knock on doors, pass out flyers, chalk, stake etc anywhere near the dorms. the dorms and the main campus are separated by a single crosswalk. any member in greek letters doing anything but walking to their own dorm room, the dining commons to eat, or to go to their car beyond that crosswalk can get fined. so basically our group camps out on the other side of the crosswalk and waits. :)

We aren't allowed to dorm storm either. From what I hear, we used to, but the RA's complained. We are allowed to post flyers around the dorms with our events on them.
|
We're not allowed to dorm-storm here, although I wish we were! It sounds like fun for both the rushees and rushers.
I don't understand the problem with passing out flyers, but we're not even allowed to do that! XOXO, Annie. |
It's easier to beg for forgiveness then ask for permission.

We just assign a brother to each floor in the dorms and it is his responsibility to get guys from that floor to events. He can always ask for help if he wants, but this seems to work well. The school recently forbid us to help frosh move in, which kind of shocked us all.

We aren't allowed in to the dorms as a group anymore, we used to go in and talk to guys and find if any of them are interested. But, dorm storming has been banned in the receuitment policy now. Have brothers that live in the dorms talk to guys. We can't stuff mailboxes, but are allowed to mail stuff if we have their name and address on it(Clarion has start to ask incoming freshman if they are interested in greek life in the survey they fill out at orientation, and if they are we get their names in a mailing list and are allowed to send them literature). We aren't even allowed in the dorms to hang stuff anymore, since they put in a new swipe card door lock system. So we have to take it to the desk and get it approved and they hang it. But as with most things it all depends on what the rules at your school are. My suggestion is just talk to guys in your classes and have your brothers do the same. Have the guys living in the dorm talk to guys in the dorm. Word of mouth is usually the best way to recruit
