NAACP

On my way to work I briefly heard that the NAACP is considering changing it's name. If I understand the comments, there is a consideration to delete the word "Colored" to be replaced by "People of Color"(?).

Any thoughts?

I think it is long overdue and am happy to hear about the consideration.

So, it would then be NAAPC? National Association for the Advancement of People of Color? It is sad, I am a student member and have not heard anything about this. I will ask at our next meeting.

Actually in my opinion I don't know if this is wise! The NAACP has a background and there is a reason for everything. If you change the name you change tradition, and there is nothing wrong with that, but I feel a name change would mean we have a complex and are afraid to hear/use the word colored ...don't be afraid of your roots!!

We still have many associates titled Negro this, and Negro that. It is a part of the tradition and more importantly a part of the reason these associates were created.

If you disagree with those names I would go so far as to say you should not like such names and Black association for XXX, they all separate groups of people, and label us. Who really wants to be labeled?

Preach on! Preach on! Preach On!
I agree totally. And what REALLY would a name change do??
Will it make the organization better, friendlier, etc.? Basically, there is no valid reason to change the name.
Besides, if they change the name everytime we change our "label" when will they find time to get down to the business of the organization?

And after you said that I thought about PRINCE, I mean the Artist formally know as Prince, but I mean now he is PRICE again. Hope you all can see the sarcasm in this. Prince, Mr.purple rain, is still the same man, a name change just makes him look a bit silly, especially when he changes it back. And I know the story as to why he changed it but I am trying to equate the reference to name changing here ... get it - got it. GOOD!!

I haven't heard about this. If they change the name to the National Association for the Advancement of People of Color, wouldn't that change the meaning? I mean, everyone knows "colored" people refers to African American. But am I off-track, or doesn't "People of color" relate to other minority groups as well (i.e. Latino)?

NAACP will take up the cause of any minority or minority related issue and that's why the debate to change the name.

I'm not a member of NAACP but should be. I don't know the current purpose of the organization. While I have no issue one way or the other changing the name I think they need to work on promoting their mission and increasing membership.

Post Scrip: Is it not a fact that the name for our people has in fact changed to suit the times i.e. nigger, colord, black, African American (just a thought????).
