questions about pledge week
I am doing a project on fraternities in my sociology class. I currently go to a communtity college, so I don't have any one at my college to talk to about this. I was wondering if someone could describe to me what pledge week was like.
Thanks a lot----- My e-mail address is: caelyb@hotmail.com |
Well, sororities usually call it Sisterhood Week or Initiation Week and the activities are meant to inspire the new members as they look forward to their initiation into the chapter. There are usually all sorts of bonding activities, small gifts, special awards and all manner of things to make the new girls excited about the upcoming ritual. The week usually culminates with an Initiation Banquet or Semi-Formal Dance to celebrate this milestone.

Traditionally (a lot of people won't tell you this) it is called Hell Week. for a lot of frats this is just what is sounds like....hell. It used to be that way for sororities but now it's completely opposite. I pledged Tri-Delta and we have Delta week. The was by far my favorite week of pledging. The whole purpose of the week is to bring the pledge class together and make them even closer. For the whole week we lived together in a suite and were treated like gold. We were given an schedule of things we did like games and dinners and events etc. Each night before we went to sleep a different group of sisters would come down for "tuck ins" which is when they would just get to know us a little better and vice versa. We would talk about things like our first kiss, what we liked and didn't like about pledging and just random stuff. At the end of the week you're initiated into the sisterhood. If you have anymore questions....feel free to email me!

The chapters I have been involved with called it I-week or Ritual Week - and, no, unlike many fraternities today, it was not a Hell week for the Associate Members. Similar to what else is posted, it is a week to focus on the upcoming ritual, and we do many activities to get the wheels turning in the associates minds that there is much more to fraternity involvement than just the better-known social side of membership. The week culminates with the initiation Ritual.

I DON'T THINK ANYONE IS GOING TO TELL YOU ABOUT WHAT GOES ON DURING PLEDGING OR HELL WEEK. THE BEST WAY TO FIND OUT IS TO SEE IF YOU HAVE ANY CLOSE FRIENDS THAT ARE AWAY AT COLLEGE AND ASK THEM WHAT THE DEAL IS AT THEIR CAMPUS. KEEP IN MIND THAT EVERY CAMPUS DIFFERS. PLEDGING AT MY SCHOOL LASTS FOR ABOUT 75-85 DAYS TOPS!! WELL, THAT'S ALL. GOODLUCK ON YOUR SEARCH FOR THE TRUTH!
