Significance of Longwood College
 

Anyone knows of any history of this college? I noticed that several GLO has be founded there.

It was the first higher learning institution in Virginia to admit women for collegiate work...that's why so many sororities were founded there.

Before it was renamed to Longwood College it was the Virginia State Female Normal School (I think I have those in the right order)

Alpha Sigma Alpha, Kappa Delta, Sigma Sigma Sigma and Zeta Tau Alpha were all founded there...yay for the Longwood Four!

It's actually called Longwood University now. I wasn't aware that so many sororities were founded there! That's so cool!

And just for some added info, Wesleyan College in Macon, GA was the first to offer undergraduate degrees to women. It became the home of Alpha Delta Pi in 1851 and Phi Mu in 1852. 150 and still going strong ;)

There is a sorority clock tower at Longwood -each of the faces have the letters of a chapter that was founded there :) I have never seen it though, only heard about it.

There is such a clock. I have some sisters with a pic of them by the ZTA face. What a neat idea!

I recently heard that Sigma Nu's Colony there is recieving its charter on the 25th of January! Congratulations to those guys! Will be the Mu Phi Chapter I think.

I'm a Longwood College/University alum! I'm visiting Farmville this weekend actually... maybe I'll take a picture of the clock and some other things and post them for you guys... Unfortunately the fire of 2001 burned down the oldest part of the college, the part where obviously the 4 sororities were founded :(

About Sigma Nu, I know they had been working hard to get their charter during the last couple of years. The GLOs that already are chartered there took a vote last year to "let them in." Obviously most of us were for it! Glad to hear their getting chartered soon :)

Ok, I tried to get a picture of the clock, but the campus is torn up right now due to construction. I couldn't get anywhere near the clock! It looks really pathetic, the ground around it is all torn up, so the clock looks like it's standing in a war-zone or something... I don't know why they didn't just take it down for the duration of the construction.

I had the opportunity to visit Longwood during ZTA's Centennial in 1998. I have many pictures of the campus, including the clock and the rotunda (that burned in 2001). Unfortunately, I don't have a way to get them online to show everyone. If I figure something out, I'll let you all know!

There is also a sign the indicates the four sororities that were founded at Longwood: Alpha Sigma Alpha, Kappa Delta, Sigma Sigma Sigma and Zeta Tau Alpha.

I am definitly proud to be a member of one of those Longwood four. I may go to grad school in Virginia. Hopefully someday I will get to visit my founding chapter.

I am the webmaster for one of the NPHC sororities there and my ex graduated from there (yes, its her sorority that I maintain the site for lol).

The fire was devastating, but at least there is still a historical monument (the clock) and the markers signifying that the 4 sororities were founded there.

Good luck getting a picture of the clock... like I said, I already tried. I mean you can get a pic, but you can't see anything in any detail at all. I did get a really good picture of the historical marker that talks about the four sororities founded. If I can figure out how, I'll post that one :)
