Points Systems
Who uses membership points systems? How do they work, what do they rate? (be as specific as possible)
Also if you use the same for your new members how does that work? Do you think it's a good way to keep members up to par? |
ADPi has a "Positive Points" system-- sisters are rewarded for campus/sorority participation and the points are tabulated each semester. You need to maintain your points in order to be eligible for chapter awards and social activities.
It's a system of checks and balances that helps members find a happy medium between school, social life and becoming a well-rounded adult. The same criteria for points exists no matter what level of membership you are at. At our end-of-the-year formals, we award those who have gotten the highest points as "Freshman of the Year," "Sophomore of the Year," and so on. Points sheets are passed out monthly for sisters to fill out and they are maintained by the Standards and Ethics Committee. We keep the incentive going by awarding "Freshman of the month," and so on with a small gift at the meeting. It's a great way to keep the chapter motivated. |
i'm attempting to bring back a points system for my chapter and i have outlines, but i don't know how to enforce it, because it hasn't helped in the past. we just really need to work on attendance and we know from experience that fines don't work.

I Cannot Imagine
a point system working for men, ever. Women seem to be very responsive to point systems and find them very useful and practical. Men, however, are different. Where women are cooperative, men are heirarchical. Men respond to other men who lead. Woemn will try to make the point system work; men will try to find a way around it, find a way to beat the system. Fraternities run on momentum and morale.

Our points were used at the end of the semester in an auction. Each point we earned was a point for bidding on items such as letters, material, things you could use for a little sister for the upcoming semester...stuff like that. The more points you had, the more you could bid, but you had to meet a certain minimum per month. It was always a lot of fun, and some of th items were purchased off of e-bay as well.

When I was thinking about how I would sell this to a chapter it was by telling them that accumulating points is a great way to avoid the events they really hate lol. Quote:

KAPPA SIGMA ALPHA-IOTA POINT SYSTEM This point system is the creation of the 1993 Executive Committee. It is designed so that each active has the equal opportunity of working and playing within the Alpha-Iota Chapter of Kappa Sigma. There are no fines associated with this point system, only positive and negative incentives. We'll finish with the negative: Those Brothers not making their monthly point totals will be put on social probation for one whole month. Those Brothers not making their cumulative point totals will be put on total probation for the first 2 months of the next semester. This involves no social, intramural, or pledge activities, and no chapter vote. One final note: An active still has to make his monthly point total eventhough he may have already obtained his cumulative point total. (This can be accomplished through inherent points, etc.) If this monthly point total is not obtained, then the active still will be on one month's probation. The March total to obtain is 50 points The April total to obtain is 40 points The cumulative total to obtain is 140 points |
This works well if you have a large chapter and people want to get into (live in the house)!

Although I think that point systems are good ways to make sure members are staying active and involved (in the chapter and in school), I think that the system need to have balance. As a collegian, I remember hating the set up of our points (like, getting an A on a test or paper was either 2 or 3 points, but - because it was once a year - participating in a Greek Week event was like 4 points).

We use ours, also, for determination of rooms. With the Pres getting the automatic option for a single (the last one if she isn't in the top four) and the housing dir to get the last space in the house (single or double) if she isn't high enough. Our house is college owned, so we have to have alternates and this is great cause they sign a place on the list in how much they want to. so if they get into the apartments they could sign up to be last on the alternate list so they'd never have to live in the next year, barring some unfortunate accident.
I'd warn on making the list too complicated, otherwise it is gonna be a pain in the ass to add up and keep track. If it is a big chapter its another story. Keep it simple so people understand it without a two hour lecture. |
Our points system is similar to the one James listed.
The following activities are worth merit points: Meetings (including appropriate attire), sisterhoods, Formal rush parties and practices (including appropriate dress), COBs, study hours, cerimones (ie: big/little, preiniation and iniation), songfest and all practices, fuzzie football out philanthrophy, panhel mandatory events, etc. For each you recieve points, depending on the importance, the number of points, like iniation is worth the most and I think study hours are the least. In order to be in good standing with the chapter you must make 80% of merit points each month. If you do not make merit points you're on social probation for the next month and cannot attend two-ways, date nights, formal, etc. Months run from the 15th to the 15th. I'll PM you the Alpha Xi Delta one when I find it, it seems to have escaped me at the moment.... ~Shady |
We use points. Actives must have 5 to be able to go to formal. We give points for handing in pictures for the scrapbook, attending non-mandatory sisterhood events, grades, etc.

we also have a point system but its secret, I can tell you this much: it is broken into four categories: community service, fundraising, DOD service, and misc which includes attending cultural events, etc.
