Question about Scholarship Chair
Ok...So this is my second time as scholarship chair and I would like to get my chapter heading in a better direction then they are. So in doing so I was trying to carfully go through the positions handbook (let me make known that last time I had this position our chapter could not find the handbook). Anyways so the real point of this is my question, when did Scholarship chair stop being an exec position and does anyone know why? The reason I ask is sadly my chapter too much does not think about our grades, so I much of the time think it needs to be an exec position.

katie,
i'm sorry but i'm not exactly sure why it isn't an exec position although you would think it would be. i have a question for you...do you do any kind of fun things like skippy jar and stuff like that. i know with our chapter as with a lot of people sometimes class is so easy to be skipped everyday which can hurt your grades. our scholarship chair i know tries to do fun things to get everybody motivated about making their grades. i hope you can get things worked out. pi love, kayla |
We do a lot of fun things from scholarship queen to smary pants...the big problem is that at our school grades are not always pushed anyways. So trying to be extra motivation can be a problem...and then in turn too many people slip around not making grades and what not...So I just wish that scholarship chair still had more power, cause it did used to be an exec position.

In 1998-99, ADPi decided to reduce the size of the executive boards of all chapters. The idea was to have the chapters work more like a corporation-- with various departments working together as committees and leaders. The board was cut probably by about 1/3.
As scholarship, your MEVP is your "boss" and the voice of scholarship on the Exec Board. You are allowed to go to the Exec Meetings to present Scholarship items, but your communication with your MEVP should be strong enough to keep this as a minimum. As your "boss," your MEVP should be working just as hard to promote scholarship. Your scholarship committee and scholarship plan (part of the chapter and CPD-approved TME outline) will help you to meet and exceed your scholarship goals. Good luck! L&L, An Alum |
I see where that makes sense and may work at some schools, but due to the fact that scholarship is sadly lacking in my chapter greatly it does not. Yes I do go to exec meetings, but no one within the chapter considers MEVP as having anything to do with scholarship (no matter what I say). Also, as for a scholarship committee, it has not worked well in the past due to lack of consideration of grades.

who all used to be exec positions that aren't anymore?
|
Used to be on Exec (back in "my" day!):
Pres EVP MEVP Treas Standards Social Panhellenic Recruitment Chair NMC Philanthropy Scholarship Property Manager This was the "old" exec. ADPi test-marketed the "new" exec that y'all now use at several schools around the country and introduced a new position: Recruitment VP. I can see where a lot of chapters wish that we could still do it the old way b/c it seems to make sense, but this new formula was tested really carefully before it was unleashed upon the whole sorority. Think of the "too many cooks in the kitchen" analogy. Less is more. I found as an undergrad, that my biggest faults and problems in being a leader were communication and getting others to communicate, too. Talk to your MEVP, talk to your Exec and your advisers about your concerns for scholarship. Although you are the scholarship chair, it isn't your job alone to take on motivating the chapter. The Exec needs to present a united front and your MEVP needs to do her job to reinforce the message, too. Your adviser can definitely help you. Set an attainable goal. I'm currently an adviser at a school on the west coast and I went to a school in the southeast where ADPi scholarship always beat the other sororities and we were consistently #1. As an adviser, I worked with the MET and Scholarship Chair to develop a plan that we passed at Exec-- it raised the chapter minimum GPA requirment and put the whole chapter on study hours for the quarter. They're in finals week now, so we'll see how it works. Throughout their quarter, they had weekly motivation awards in chapter, a bulletin board to display accomplishments, a dinner honoring ADPi scholars and professors and more! It is possible to bring about change. But it takes more than one person sometimes to make it happen. Don't lose heart! Pi Love, an alum |
Katie,
I was Scholarship chair this year (now i'm Spirit Chair, wohoo :) ) Some ideas would be: - mandatory Study hours for members less than a 3.0 - the Skippy Jar - restrictions on social activities - scholarship contract (between member and u) saying something like i will spend 5 more hours studying a week, get a tutor, see the teacher, or whatnot. Then have a mid semster check on the progress (mid semster grade checks) and if they are fullfilling their scholarship contract, then they can earn the social privilages back. -I have a Scholarship plan that outlines the concequences of not making grades, rewards for making grades, etc. I can email it to you if you want. -Also if u still are having a problem getting the support. Maybe try talking to the President about the problems and maybe u can work something out. Good luck next semster!!! Pi love, Ally |
thanks for all the great ideas ADPis! Scholarship is the very reason we are in a sorority at all, so it should be a huge component of the ADPi experience.
Some ideas: A) make scholarship something you work into conversations at Rush...start at the beginning with the new women who will be your sisters. B) study hours for the entire sorority, such a simple and effective way of bringing up the gpa. there's truly nothing like actually studying to do the trick. C) do a time management workshop asap D) let the 3 or 4 woman in your chapter with the highest gpas run a workshop on how they chose their major, how they choose classes and how they take notes and study the next two are some big projects that you could do as scholarship chair: E) as scholarship chair become a resource...do you know how a sister could go about getting a tutor on campus? Do you know about all your school's scholarship opportunities? what about all the advising your college offers. my suggestion is too look at all the materials your college gives to prospective students, they usually list a lot of resources in those materials; resources that many an undergrad never, ever accesses. look into all of them and write up a "handbook" for your chapter F)pick a woman from each class to be a "scholarship steering committee" G) learn all about your school's library system, seems silly but this is also an amazing on campus resources that gets used only to sit in and study. many librarians will actually help students organize a research project, or will order books that are needed. Other university libraries offer brief seminars and tours of the facilities at the start of each semester...make sure you know what your library does offer. good luck and let us know how your chapter proceeds, Pi love, violets |
We have mandatory study hours for our Alpha members that must be completed at the library or signed by an RA. (9 a week)
Even some of our active members have them it goes as follows: Perfect Pi (3.14 and higher) NO STUDY HOURS ASSIGNED!!:) 3.0-3.14 has 3 study hours per week 3.0 and lower has 6 a week We turn these in in order to go to date parties, mixers and other sisterhood events. I know that my chapter all strives to be PERFECT PI's!! Pi love and Mine, Amanda Epsilon Zeta Chapter <>First and the Finest<> |
