CosmoGirl of Year!!!
Way to go Phis!!!
FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT She's cute. Vivacious. Inspiring. Cosmo named her CosmoGirl of the Year. And if you mess with her - she will kick your butt. She's Erin Weed (Zeta Alpha, Eastern Illinois) - founder, leader and teacher of Girls Fight Back (GFB), an innovative self-defense program for women. Erin teaches women to fend off attackers with simple, powerful techniques. She also motivates women to trust their intuition to avoid potentially dangerous situations. "I want to empower women to be strong. To fight for their lives. Let's make it an understood concept in society that any man who attempts to victimize a woman will get his ass kicked," says Erin. She founded GFB after her best friend and Alpha Phi sister, Shannon McNamara (Zeta Alpha, Eastern Illinois), was murdered in her college apartment in June 2001. "The best compliment I've ever received was from a friend of Shannon's who saw GFB for the first time. She said, 'Shannon would've loved this!' I like to think that she still does," Erin says. Bring Erin to your office, your alumnae group, your city. In Erin's words - be strong. Resilient. Spirited. Unified. (And if anyone threatens your life - kick his butt.) :D |
Erin is AWESOME. She did her Girls Fight Back presentation at regional conference last year, and it was amazing. She is a fantastic speaker and she is really doing something wonderful for women everywhere, and truly honoring the memory of Shannon! You GO girl!!!

As a side note...Shannon's attacker was caught and he is currently being prosecuted. His trial should start in January. Please keep Shannon, her family, and her sisters in your prayers as they enter this very difficult period. |
Erin came to my school, Midwestern State University, this past semester. She was awesome. All the sororities on campus came out to see her. It was great! I was very proud to say that she is an APhi!
