He is the Bro. from Fl Tech that I have mentioned and flew me down for the 30 th as a guest speaker. I met others, from Fl. Tech, U Wyoming, and U Fl. that came down! That is what one will get into by becoming a member of a GREEK ORG! It Is Fantastic!:D  |

Marie, I don't have any advice about your call to the Alum Chapter Prez, but I just wanted to wish you good luck! ;)
|
Marie, jsut be your self and dont try to push to hard, as I am sure there will be questions asked about what you do and what you like. Dont Toot the horn to much and bang the drum to loudly.
Be concise, friendly, and show that your are interested in belonging to a Group that is willing to do things outside of the box to help others and show that Greeks Can and Will Do Things for the Betterment of others!:) The very best of LUCKY to you and Please Keep us updated! Keeping you in my thoughts! |

Re: UPDATE!
If you can manage to find a sitter, bring your husband! I'm sure it would be fun for him and you would probably be more relaxed. However, if he can't go, absolutely GO and have a great time!!! It's totally normal to be nervous -- I was SO nervous before my first alumnae activity -- it was a Founders' Day brunch at a ritzy restaurant, with three alumnae chapters in attendance and I did not know a SOUL. One woman sort of took me under her wing from the start, and I didn't stand alone or feel awkward for one second! You will probably have a wonderful time! I'm sure it won't happen, but look at it this way: if they don't make you feel comfortable and welcome, maybe it's not the group for you, you know -- and it would be better to find that out right away, right?
Of course, I'm sure they will be friendly and wonderful and will do their best to make you feel comfortable. You know, it makes me think, as alumnae initiation becomes more popular -- wouldn't it be great if chapters had a sort of "big sister" who would be in charge of welcoming and introducing potential alumnae initiates at their first activities? That would be cool! What are you going to wear? I love hearing about clothes... ;) |

Way to go, Marie!
I think you're doing just fine. You better believe I'm taking notes for when it's my turn to walk into a social situation like that. ;) If you really feel that you need some pre-party introduction, then your idea of calling for directions is a good and very plausible one. If nothing else, you will feel a bit more like you "know" someone there, and not like you're on another planet. ;) As far as how to meet strangers in a group, here's my advice from quite a few years (!!!) walking into "cold" cocktail parties for work and church, charity galas, college alumni meetings etc: Smile! :D No kidding, it really is that simple. A big, sincere, toothy, happy, outgoing smile will open every door every time. You will appear to others that you are 100% calm, cool, collected and above all: happy with yourself and comfortable in your own skin. Just like the alum prez said just introduce yourself. Stick your hand out to shake and start talking. It works--not only on others but it will make you more at ease too! Adrienne (If you have to do this all night (4+ hours), don't forget a touch of Vaseline on your teeth. Anyone who wants the details of that little gem, PM me.) :D |
