University of Houston recently had a Strut Your Stuff competition for homecoming. It was separated into three categories: Large Group, Small Group and Step. I had never seen a live step show presentation before and I was very impressed. However I am not aware of any up and coming step events.

This is a link to the Pan-Hellenic groups at Univ. of Houston. I bet they could lead you in the right direction! Good luck! Step shows are a blast!

i've been on several step teams w/my chapter. this fall, we've won 3 shows-Riverfront Classic/Cincy, Circle City Classic/Indy, Xavier U./Cincy. we've been practicing since May and all our time and hard work paid off, handsomely:D

kinda off topic.... but

One of our newest sisters wants to make us a step routine. Which is fine, but we are a social local sorority. All of the GLO's on campus which have step routines are cultural GLO's. Do you think that it would look bad or disresceptful for us to have a step dance within our sorority? this is NOT anything that ANY of the social GLO's does.

YES

What significance does the tradition of stepping have to non-BGLOs (and non-HGLOs)? I say leave it alone because it will turn out to be a mockery AT BEST. Just enjoy the shows...don't strive to be in one. If you're newest sister wants to step so bad, tell her to volunteer for a youth step team or something.

I disagree. The non-BGLOs at my campus do a step show every year; the black GLOS team up with them and teach them how to step. Like, Phi Beta Sigma did a routine with Alpha Gamma Delta. Since they've started doing this a few years ago, there's a lot more interation between the groups. I also think it helps non black GLOS to learn about others' traditions and grow to respect them.

but, that's rare. the majority of BGLO members feel the same way I do or very similar (regardless of what they say). i think GLOs can (and should) learn about BGLO traditions without actually participating in them...namely stepping.

i agree with the whole mockery thing, because it's going to hard to take something like that seriously. i know i'd have a hard time.

preparing for step exhibitions/step shows can be very hard (and enjoyable) work. if you love to step you will love the preparation involved (however frustrating it can be at times). it really depends on the level of skill of the steppers, some people catch on quicker than others. since one weak link ruins the whole, it can be a tedious task getting everyone precise and synchronized.

Well said Soror, I agree 100%!

jojapeach 11-25-2002 06:50 AM

Can't 100% agree with mockery, but...

It depends on the context of why a non-BGLO would be stepping. If you are stepping by yourselves without any guidance from a BGLO and doing it "just because", it would definitely be seen as a mockery no matter what defense (admiration, emulation, etc) was offered.

If participation was on the part that sairose spoke of (non-BGLOs being taught by BGLOs), then it's different. For instance, my sorors at UGA successfully hosted their 2nd annual step show this year, and it featured four non-BGLO sororities. They were taught by my sorors and Zeta Phi Beta, and at least 1 soror from SGRho and ZPhiB stepped with each non-BGLO sorority. There was nothing but love and fun on the stage and in the audience. It created greater unity and a connection that is bound to grow. DISCLAIMER: They were taught steps, but they weren't taught any traditional steps or cane steps.

So, BearyCuteAPhi, I think it should not be pursued "just because...", especially if the Greek climate there is not very open or unified.

BTW, ChaosDST, I've only seen one excellent step routine flawlessly executed by a non-BGLO sorority, the ZTAs of Valdosta (GA) State University. They won the show with a lot of precise, complicated steps including one where they made the beat to DMX's "Ruff Ryders Anthem". It blew everyone away, and it definitely was not a mockery. Just an interesting tidbit.
