Mandatory mixers

I didn't know whether to put this under programming or here, but since it touches on alcohol issues I thought I'd stick it here.

I know when I was in school we were told we could not make mixers mandatory since they involved alcohol. Well since mixers are all dry or 3rd party now, can they be mandatory? What if the vendor won't let people under a certain age in? (Remember I live in PA and the whole concept of being able to get into a bar, yet not drink, if you're underage is foreign to me.)

This seems like something that could be worked out with the vendor beforehand. For the mixer at a bar, pass out either those pesky arm bracelets that signify who is 21, or do what the clubs in dc do and whip out a permanent marker designating who is NOT 21 by a big X on the wrist. That way the bartender can tell who is and isnt of age. That way you could still get out and about, just not drink.

I don't see how or why a social event should be made mandatory, dry or not. If it is an event that is not interesting to me, I wouldn't want to be forced to attend.

Service, ritual and sisterhood events could be made mandatory, possibly even homecoming or Greek Week events.

Just my 2 shekels,

I can recall mixers being mandatory for pledges, but this way waaaaaaay back in the politically incorrect stone ages (back when rush was rush and pledges were pledges and scavenger hunts were just plain fun!)!
