Say goodbye to SAM hazers at Texas

UT Fraternity Suspended For Hazing Allegations
Allegations of hazing forces the University of Texas to suspend a fraternity. Sigma Alpha Mu was already on probation for a hazing incident last year. Fraternity members say they don't know what the hazing allegations are. They're waiting on a letter from the university to explain the specifics. The president of the inter fraternity council at UT says Sigma Alpha Mu is not an animal house type fraternity. The university should complete its investigation by next week. 12 fraternal groups at UT have been penalized for hazing in three years.

Well, without knowing the specifics, this sounds like administrators jumping the gun. If the IFC Prez is saying this is OK then. I really am getting upset at people not giving clear and concise explainations of what constitutes hazing and what does not. What can be strenuous to one person can be a cakewalk to another. Just my two cents.

Well this was at UT. Texas has some pretty strict laws about hazing. Maybe those came into playin this decision.

Doesn't sound like a real Greek-friendly environment, does it?

The UT admin are not necessarily "friendly" to Greeks, but the contingency of people that are Greek and their influence around campus is very strong. To the University's defense, a lot of fraternities have a loooong history of hazing there. But, there's been a lot of effort to reform in recent years, with new chapters chartering that are adamantly anti-hazing. A lot of this came about when the University allowed Greek orgs to be recognized as University sanctioned student organizations, subject to University jurisdiction and regulations. Before that, NPC, NPHC and IFC were not University organizations.
