What, in this article, requires that the media identifies these three guys as brothers of Tau Kappa Epsilon at Drexel?? Their fraternity association had nothing to do with this crime!!

It's relevent because that's the channel through which they came in contact. It is perhaps the only common bond the three men have. So I can see that it may be relevant.

I disagree. They can say that they were fraternity brothers in college, but they needn't name TKE in the story AT ALL! As I live in Philadelphia, and Drexel is there, this story is all over our news, and they keep showing their house and stuff on tv. I think that's crap.

Well, the fraternity association was just mentioned by Jim Rome on his national radio show. I bet that his listeners will mention it prominently when they send e-mails with their takes.

I guess putting a fraternity with it makes the story more interesting. These guys are alumni and haven't been to college in many years. Don't know why they would show the TKE house for, its not like the chapter had any thing to do with it just a few of their alums.

There was a post somewhere else on GC about this, and one of the first replies was, "Anyone know what fraternity they belong(ed) to?"

And that was from a fellow Greek.

I agree that their fraternity affiliation is irrelevant. The article stated that they're all 29 years old. Obviously, they've been out of college for awhile. Now, maybe if they were actives and this whole betting thing was going on within the context of the fraternity, then ok. But not in this case.

Shadokat, although I agree with you I'm afraid that the fraternity's name was bound to come up. It's just something that comes along with the territory. Once a member, always a member is how Greek life works. Once you join you are pemanently tagged. Trust me, the media will use every opportunity to exaggerate "Greek Crime". So my advise to you is to just get used to it.

Yes I wanted to know what Fraternity these guys were from, but that is because I am a Greek.

As typical, the news media belabors the Greek Fact because that gives more headlines, dirt, and belittles all of the Greek Community!

This had nothing to do with the TKE Fraternity, but makes more interesting news. Hell, they are getting more like the Tabloids that they always make a point of degrading!

Yes, I watch the news on TV and read 2 papers every morning.

I cant wait to get to the cartoon section to find enjoyment and then the cross word puzzles.

I almost e-m a TV station about something that "THEY" just uncovered. Hell it was in teh print news before they aired it by 4 ays!

This is the same station I called to task about opening the 10:00 news with a belabored point about the SAE Chapter at UMKC! (KC, MO)

I got an apologie from them, but by then it was to damn late!

I heard they had pledged 10 percent to the TKE Natl. Educational Foundation, 10 percent to Drexel TKE house improvements, and 10 percent to develop software to keep dumb posts off GC.

Now if J Edgar Hoover (a KA) was still alive, he might let them off as "fraternal courtesy"

Well, I guess I should stop planning my crime spree. ;) :rolleyes: :p

Ya, ya, ya, it sucks that it was a group of Fraternity brothers that allegedly commited the crime, but I think there are enough reporters out there that were actually in a Fraternity or Sorority to know that people will ask what group they were in. It is just kinda the way life goes. I mean, look at the AKA thing that happened in LA or the Pi Kappa Phi thing, people want to know. Deal with it, it is only important to fellow Greeks which group was involved, even in a minor way, and just keep in mind that you represent all Greeks to the unitiated, not just your organization.

I agree that the mentioning of TKE had no relevance in the story. And I think that it is bad jounalism to mention it. However, I always have to remember that anything I do can effect the reputation of my chapter and national organization. I am a Pi Kapp for once and always and I should conduct myself accordingly. The last thing any of us should want to do is be a discredit to our fraternity.

Nope. In most states, truth is an absolute defense to slander and libel. You can tell the truth about a public figure like a national fraternity almost without limitation...even when it's a slanted or irrelevant truth.
