"...Servants of All..."

I was discussing an issue with a couple of chapter bruhs the other night that I thought I would discuss with the bruhs on GC. There is an issue with some older brothers who are deep into their careers and families and what not, about what type of service they should render to Alpha. There is an alumni chapter in a nearby city that consists of mostly older brothers (in their 40's and 50's and beyond). They conduct an Ebony Fashion Fair in our city every two years that does well. But that is pretty much about all that they do, social stuff and then give away scholarships. When it comes to doing the national projects, they deem those as "work for the younger brothers, we've put in our time, so now we just do things that are wives would enjoy and don't require too much 'grunt work' ". Now, I thought that this was too "country clubish" of an attitude to take in Alpha. (Take that stuff to the Boule' ) But a few chapter bruhs thought that doing certain things (like shaking cans for donations for our thanksgiving food drive, http://www.geocities.com/xel1982/Tha...DriveInfo.htm,

or going door to door for "voteless people") was beneath certain men at certain levels in life. I personally don't see anything wrong with serving people at 25 or at 55. I understand that they are what some might consider "more glamorous" or "more dignified " ways of serving, but I do not see it as less than dignified to register eligible voters in the projects anyway I can. Question, is there a point in the lives of brothers where we should become more "sophisticated" in the services we render (i.e. write checks rather than pan-handle for our philanthropies) not necessarily out of efficiency sake, but out of a sense of "let's move on and become more sophisticated because we are"?

Hold Up

We have already had the Boule' bashing. I think the issue to grasp is that many organizations, not just Alpha, serve the community.

I'm at that in between age. I can appreciate the ideas of younger and older brothers. Time is very interesting and so is Alpha. Time allows us to grow to be better Alphamen. In addition, time affords an opportunity to nuture younger brothers in hopes that one day they will become the future leaders of our beloved APHIA. To that end, I suggest the business of Alpha never ends. However, the dimensions in which we have and will serve will change much as time allows.
