What's the secret?
 

Why is it that all of the sorrorities and fraternities at my school are so secretive about their pledge program. I would love to know what other greek orgs do during their pledging so that my sorrority can come up with some new events. Anytime I ask someone about their pledging process they say that they can not tell me. What are they doing that is so bad that they can not tell me. My sorrority has a clean fun pledge program, and we are not afraid to tell future pledges what our pledging program is about.

One of the aspects of being in a "sorority" (one r) is having discretion--having the ability to be discreet in wise conduct and management.

Being secretive of the pledge process does not mean that something terrible is going on. Most of the organizations of the NPC have similar NEW MEMBER programs which deals a lot with Fraternity education, and there's nothing secret about it at all!

The members of the sororities choose not to disclose their information to you because whatever they do, it is special to them, and it's not something that outsiders will understand.

If your looking for new and fun activities for your pledge program, I have a few suggestions.

* If your a multi-chapter organization, at your National gatherings, inquire with other chapters what they do for their pledge programs. Each chapter will have similiar objectives as they are from the same national organization, but I've yet to see a national org that doesn't have some variations between chapters.

* Look to the objective of the activites for the new members. If you are wanting to do a review of the history/ideals of the organization, modify a board game or a tv game show. If you are wanting to have a sisterhood building day between new members and actives/alum, remeber your childhood: pull out coloring books, finger paints and playdough.

Many activites exist that are clean and fun. And like the others have posted, sometimes discression and a bit of anticipation due to secretiviness can add an element of bonding within the organization. You can calm fears without disclosing every activity.

Guzzler, May I guess you AKA (Alias) says it all? The idea of a society of Brothers?Sisters is for the ones who are in the bonding to become fellow Brothers and Sisters of a close knot Organization. Why should you know if you are not interested in becoming a member of that group! Why dont you join and find out what it is all about instead of looking in? Join and find out what is all about!
To be blunt, if you are not interested enough to join and find out then butt out!

Well, my fraternity, for one, is 50/50 -- the program itself is secret, but a lot of our events are held in public for everyone to see if they care to find us...

Mainly, the reason it's secretive is a two fold process:

a) It entices people to join to actually find out what's so great about joining the greek system, I know I wouldn't have been curious about it if I extensively knew what my peers had really gone through;

b) The experience really changes you when you don't know what to really expect from your pledgehood;

c) Bonding. Combining the past with the present with the sharing of what happened before with what happened now and what will happen in the future, just within the group.

This person is not in a sorority (one R) at all! I think that this post was designed to entice REAL members to divulge information. Don't waste your time!

What occurs doing a pledge process should be symbolic to the specific organization. Therefore by telling what goes on, one is probably spilling secrets about the organization that only members should know. Furthermore by asking for advice and ideas from other organizations you're basically saying that your process has little symbolism and you're just looking for stuff to do.
