Frustrated...any ideas?

Hi All,

I just met with another advisor who quite patronizingly told me that while she understood that the Alcohol Initiative (3rd Party Vendor thing...I can't recall the formal name right this second...) was agreed to by her sorority, she felt it would be suicide for her Chapter at that campus to follow it, and she believed that I was crazy for expecting my Chapter to follow it as well.

This is so frustrating! If no one else will follow this policy it does hurt our Chapters as no fraternities will want to mix with them as it would require them to put forth some extra effort to hold the mixers at 3rd Party Vendors.

Why did this pass if no one ever planned to follow it? I truly believe D Phi E is the only sorority at that campus who is following this.

I'm not going to tell our Chapter there they don't have to follow it; it's currently a non-issue as they aren't allowed to mix due to sanctions incurred from a hazing violation. Has anyone else had to deal with something like this? I can understand Collegians not following it but I'd never expect an ADVISOR to be like, "I know we signed that honey but it's stupid."

Any suggestions? I need to think of easy "3rd Party" vendor ideas for them if they get their Social Privliges back, has anyone confronted or talked to another advisor about the need for them to support this initiative, and if so what did you say?

This Campus has no full time Greek Advisor.

Thanks!

PS...

The other advisor was not a D Phi E...I need to specify that.

What school is this at?

I think you should bring this situation to the attention of our NPC delegation-- not because they should address this situation in particular (although they may) but because they need to be aware of how the policy is being implemented and the challenges faced by our chapters in the Panhellenic community.

We are working on it. Michelle knows about our problem already. Thanks for the advice Heather, I may send my report about this to her as well!! Shadokat, I'll pm you!!

If it makes you feel any better, the legal drinking age where I live is 18. Our entire chapter is above that age and we still have to follow the rules!

Hi Goldie_DphiE. Welcome to Greekchat! :D I forgot that Canada's drinking age is different from the USA.

Zephyr, I hope that everything works out at the campus you described. I think that as an advisor it was really bad for her to say that. Good luck!

my chapter is going through the same thing; BC's drinking age is 19, so at least 95% of the chapter is legal. It's been tough.

Honestly, whether or not people are of age is kind of obsolete (yes I know it might make things a lot easier). I just think as advisors we have to set certain guidelines and examples for our Chapters to follow.

Regardless of whether or not I think this initiative is a good idea, and I'm not commenting on that, it's the RULES, and we will follow them. I just could not believe that the other advisor was so blatantly blase about following it!

It makes my job so much harder in that our girls thought this initiative was on a D Phi E thing...they were completely unaware that EVERY sorority was supposed to be following it!!!

I still can't believe how rude that advisor was. I'd never say what sorority it was but... I guess you reap what you sow. I take comfort in knowing sooner or later there are going to be repercussions for not following the intiatives, and we'll be in the clear.

That is so true... the Greek Advisor, and Student Activites Office on my school have really began to "crack down" on all the drinking that is not supposed to be happening with both the IFC and NPC. One fraternity has already been put on suspension and some others have got themselves in trouble as well for not following all those rules.

I think it would be a lot easier to get to the root of the problem if the Greek Advisor and Student Activies Office got involved. It's up to them to help enforce the rules.. maybe the Panhelleic Council on your school may be able to help as well.
