Another hazing movie?
On one of the channels down here, it may have been that channel for women's entertainment. There was a movie on called, I believe, Dying to get in.
It was about hazing in a sorority house. I was at work when it came on so I only saw bits and pieces. Did anyone see it any comments? |
Sad that they used the sorority as the scapegoat to perpetuate the stereotype.
And the star, Jenna Von Oy from Blossom --is a Kappa Alpha Theta from Univ. of So Cal .... [This message has been edited by amycat412 (edited March 15, 2001).] |
I have seen it before but not all of it. From what I saw of the movie it was very stereotypical. If anyone knows when it will be shown on television again please let me know. Thanks.

The BAD always makes better press and show than the good!!!!! Weigh the things that Greeks do and take everything else as a grain of SALT!

That movie,I believe, is from way back in 1997 or 1998.
It appears that every year, around mid-september, there is a frat/soror based movie about hazing. Maybe not so much anymore, but I remember thinking that in the mid to late 90s. My best friend and I always commented on them. There is a national movement against the greek system. The media perpetuates it with these kind of movies... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif . |

As far as that "movie" is concerned, if I would have had to put up with those 2 chicks, I would have wanted to push them off a balcony too. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif |
I saw it this past weekend (with Hillary Swank and that chick from "Blossom" - right?)
The only part that bothered me was my husband asking me every 5 minutes... "does that really happen?" - (he is not greek) I think the movie more deals with a girl's self-esteem; not what a sorority made her do. It could happen if she tried out for the cheerleading squard, pep squad, homecoming queen or every day life in a young women with peer pressure to be the most thin, beautiful and popular. Sororities were used as the scapegoat in the movie. |
Yeah so it seemed. I have to say that the circling the fat idea (they do it in the movie) has to be one of the most recurring themes associated with sororities.
Also, I believe the movie was "Dying to Belong". Didn't the pledge die by accident but they closed the House anyway? ITs funny but I was speaking to an acquaintances girl friend (she attends another school)the other night and I tried to persuade her to give Greek Life a chance, and she gave me the whole circle the fat story (she's pretty thin). I basicially told her that it was jutst a silly urban legend and she responded that she knew girls in different groups that admitted to doint it . . . Odd . . . |
33 girl-
Thanks for the laugh on a TGIF!! You are too funny! |
I watched that movie with my brother. He knows I am planning to rush in the fall, and the whole time he kept on asking me, "are you really going to put yourself through all this just to be in a sorority?" and making snide remarks to downplay my decision. I am going to rush for the aspect of sisterhood, and I told him that. The school I'm going to be at next year, of course, has an anti-hazing policy, so I am not very concerned about that type of thing http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Great comment orchid2. The fact is, the media can portray the Greek system as much as they want, and yeah, there are a few bad apples, but for the most part Greeks are good, solid people who value brotherhood/sisterhood above all else, and make great friends. That's the bottom line.

I remember when an airplane ripped open & almost crashed. There was a movie about that. Would your brother let you get on a plane?
The media likes attention getters. They don't do stories about a plane flying & nothing going wrong. They don't make movies about the thousands of greek chapters that go about their business day by day with no major incidents either. Interesting movie, but not at all representitive of most peoples' experiences. Best of luck during your recruitment! Heidi |
