Badge rules?
We kind of hijacked lionlove's thread with this topic :) and I thought it deserved its own thread. I've learned some interesting tidbits (I still can't imagine not being allowed to have a chapter guard...) and I'd like to find out what different org's rules are. I'm particularly interested in hearing from NPC sororities, NIC fraternities, NPHC groups, local and regional groups... everyone actually :)
So please answer the following... Name your GLO Describe your badge and new member pin Where can you wear your badge? (does it have to be over the heart, is a suit jacket ok or does it have to be on the blouse/shirt, if you're wearing other pins (like an Order of Omega pin) do they have to be below your badge, etc) Do you require new members to wear their pins at all times? Can you attach anything to your badge? (chapter guard, etc) Can you use a badge buddy? Can you make your badge into a pendant or ring? What other official jewelry does your GLO have? (president's ring, award pins, mother's/father's pins, sweetheart pins, etc) |
Re: Badge rules?
My answers...
Name your GLO Alpha Epsilon Phi Describe your badge and new member pin Badge = the Greek letters set with a total of 27 pearls on a gold bar. NM pin = the crest (columns) without the Greek letters. Where can you wear your badge? (does it have to be over the heart, is a suit jacket ok or does it have to be on the blouse/shirt, if you're wearing other pins (like an Order of Omega pin) do they have to be below your badge, etc) Always over the heart, can be worn on a suit jacket, but not on athletic wear or on an overcoat. Other pins go below or next to the badge. Do you require new members to wear their pins at all times? Nope, but we were strongly encouraged to do so. I wore mine most of the time. Can you attach anything to your badge? (chapter guard, etc) We can attach a chapter guard, but the guards have to be ordered from nationals. They are pearl set to match the badge. Can you use a badge buddy? Not sure... I never heard of a badge buddy before RedRoseSAI mentioned it in the other thread. I wouldn't use one, simply because part of the purpose of a guard is to make sure you don't lose your badge. Can you make your badge into a pendant or ring? No :( otherwise I'd have made my new member pin into a pendant long ago. What other official jewelry does your GLO have? (president's ring, award pins, mother's/father's pins, sweetheart pins, etc) Very few :( I think my mom would have loved to have a mother's pin, but we don't have one. |

Delta Phi Epsilon International Sorority Describe your badge and new member pin NM Pin: Purple triangle with gold letters Delta Phi and Epsilon Badge: onyx triangle with the letters Delta Phi and Epsilon surrounded by a larger gold triangle with 21 embedded pearls and our motto in a gold ribbon below. Where can you wear your badge? (does it have to be over the heart, is a suit jacket ok or does it have to be on the blouse/shirt, if you're wearing other pins (like an Order of Omega pin) do they have to be below your badge, etc) Badges are worn over the heart with pin attire (dressed up). Other pins go below your badge. Do you require new members to wear their pins at all times? No, but it is encouraged. Can you attach anything to your badge? (chapter guard, etc) Yes, chapter guard, alumni service guard, plus others I don't know. You also can have officer dangles. Can you use a badge buddy? I don't know what this is. (president's ring, award pins, mother's/father's pins, sweetheart pins, etc) [/B] We have a president's something...lots of dangles. Name your GLO
Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority Describe your badge and new member pin Active badge: http://www.burrpatt.com/AlphaSigmaAlpha/default.htm in top left hand corner. Pledge pin is the same shape, only it's a single layer in silver and has the ASA letters only. We used to be told you could not wear the pin on a lapel - but I've asked national ritual chairs and they said this is not true. I think as long as the jacket is staying on you can wear it on a lapel. Do you require new members to wear their pins at all times? No, I don't believe so. Can you attach anything to your badge? (chapter guard, etc) Yes - chapter guards & officer dangles. Can you use a badge buddy? Never heard of them till now. Can you make your badge into a pendant or ring? Yes What other official jewelry does your GLO have? (president's ring, award pins, mother's/father's pins, sweetheart pins, etc) We have council pins for national council members, the Phoenix Recognition Pin for a non-member or member who has done a lot for the sorority (we gave it to our sweethearts) and the Mother Patroness Pin, usually for women who are longtime advisors. |
Zeta Tau Alpha (women's) Fraternity
*the pledge pin: A silver carpenter's square enameled in turquoise, worn by all Fraternity members prior to Initiation. *the badge: A small, black enameled shield superimposed upon a gold shield, bearing a five-pointed crown with the letters "ZTA" arranged around it and the word "Themis" in greek lettering. Themis is our patron goddess, the Greek goddess of justice. Only initiated members may where the badge and the crest. It can be ordered in a variety of styles: silver, 10k gold, 14k gold, and with various jewels of choice surrounding the face (diamonds, pearls, sapphire, ruby, emerald, amethyst, garnet, and turquoise enhancements). Most people in my chapter get the silver badge. Mine is plain 10k gold, but I want to send it in someday to get jewels on it. *Where can you wear your badge? (does it have to be over the heart, is a suit jacket ok or does it have to be on the blouse/shirt, if you're wearing other pins (like an Order of Omega pin) do they have to be below your badge, etc) Both the pledge pin and the badge are worn over the heart, and only while in proper attire (no t-shirts, jeans, or sweatsuits for example) No other jewelery is to be worn with the badge during rituals with the exception of a lavalier (not your own- only one that your fraternity boyfriend gave to you), an engagement ring, or a wedding ring. Any other pins are to be worn below the badge as a sign of respect for the badge. *Do you require new members to wear their pins at all times? No, but usually they are very excited and want to wear it all the time. *Can you attach anything to your badge? chapter guards, pearl drops (for getting a 4.0 during the last semester), and officer dangles. *Can you use a badge buddy? what the heck is that? lol *Can you make your badge into a pendant or ring? NO. ABSOLUTELY NOT! Although we pay for our badges, the badge is still considered property of Zeta Tau Alpha, and it is ONLY to be worn as a badge and nothing else. There are, however, crest rings available for purchase. *What other official jewelry does your GLO have? **The Honor Ring: awarded to alumnae who devote extensive volunteer work to the Fraternity. **The mother's pin: A small, turquoise blue and silver crown with the outline of a white violet. It may be worn by the mothers of initiated members. **The White Violet pin: for someone who has been a member for 50 years or more. we also have lavaliers, pendants, and various styles of rings (some with letters, some with the crest, some with the crown, etc) PICTURES OF THESE CAN BE FOUND AT: http://www.zetataualpha.org/jewel.htm |

Name your GLO
Alpha Gamma Delta Describe your badge and new member pin Badge = a monogram of the Greek letters, with the Delta plain, the Gamma chased, and the Alpha may be decorated either plain, with 14 pearls, or with a diamond and pearls. Our International President wears one decorated with 14 diamonds. NM pin = a shield of red, buff, and green. Described heraldically its: on a shield, parti per pale or and vert, a fess gules. Where can you wear your badge? (does it have to be over the heart, is a suit jacket ok or does it have to be on the blouse/shirt, if you're wearing other pins (like an Order of Omega pin) do they have to be below your badge, etc) Collegiates must wear their badge over the heart in the traditional manner. Alumnae may wear their pins in the traditional way, on a suit lapel, or on a collar. Any other honor pins or men's fraternity pins must be worn lower and to the left of the badge. Do you require new members to wear their pins at all times? No, but you are strongly encouraged to do so as often as you like. Of course, not on sweatshirts or ripped jeans, etc. Can you attach anything to your badge? (chapter guard, etc) We can attach a chapter guard. I've also seen some pretty Crest guards. They can be ordered plain, chased, or with pearls. Alumnae often wear their Honors of Epsilon Pi instead (see below). Can you use a badge buddy? I've never heard of one before, so I'm not sure! I'm guessing no. Can you make your badge into a pendant or ring? Yes! We have special coverters you can buy, once you're an alumna. What other official jewelry does your GLO have? (president's ring, award pins, mother's/father's pins, sweetheart pins, etc) We have TONS of offiical jewelry--I especially love our Mother's Pins, the Rose Drop Bracelet, and the Foundation Pendant given to the senior with the Highest GPA. The other big official jewelry are our Honors of Epsilon Pi, which are given to alumnae who serve the Fraternity. I think there are 8, and the longer you serve, the higher the honor. The top honor, the Circle of Epsilon Pi, is so rarely given that less than 20 women in our nearly 100 years have received it. Edited for bad formatting! |
I pretty much covered ours in the other thread, but I'll post them again. Plus I got to find out what all other jewelry we had!
Name Your GLO Delta Omicron Describe your badge and new member pin Our badge is a golden lyre with the letters Delta and Omicron inscribed. Jewled badges are available, but I've never seen one. New member pins are the silver letters Delta and Omicron. Where can you wear your badge? (does it have to be over the heart, is a suit jacket ok or does it have to be on the blouse/shirt, if you're wearing other pins (like an Order of Omega pin) do they have to be below your badge, etc) It must be worn over the heart, only on a shirt or blouse (if wearing a suit jacket, it should be worn on the inside layer). Pin attire is a dress/skirt or a <i>very</i> nice pair of slacks. The informal rule of thumb is, if you're wearing socks, you shouldn't be wearing your pin. Any other pins must be worn below and to the left of the Delta Omicron badge. Do you require new members to wear their pins at all times? When I pledged, yes. (well, within reason of course!) However, I believe the new rule is that pledges are not required, but highly encouraged. Can you attach anything to your badge? (chapter guard, etc) No. Can you use a badge buddy? Absolutely not! Can you make your badge into a pendant or ring? Absolutely not! (although I wish we could) What other official jewelry does your GLO have? (president's ring, award pins, mother's/father's pins, sweetheart pins, etc) We can order officers pins, but hardly anyone ever does. We also have a few recognition pins (Star of DO, which is a Senior Honour Pin and some others...) 25 and 50 year pins, and a Mother's pin. |
Name your GLO : Sigma Alpha Iota
Describe your badge and new member pin : New member pin is 7 gold panpipe Badge is a circle of pearls with panpipes in the middle and our letters are on the outside of the circle Where can you wear your badge? (does it have to be over the heart, is a suit jacket ok or does it have to be on the blouse/shirt, if you're wearing other pins (like an Order of Omega pin) do they have to be below your badge, etc): We have to wear it over the heart, and a suit jacket is ok but nothing else. If there is another organization's badge it may be worn at the same level but not above. We are not allowed to wear our badge when we are wearing anything made of denim or if we are wearing athletic clothes or shorts. Do you require new members to wear their pins at all times? No but we definitely encourage it Can you attach anything to your badge? (chapter guard, etc) Yes we have chapter guards and guards for officers Can you use a badge buddy? I'm assuming no... Can you make your badge into a pendant or ring? Nope What other official jewelry does your GLO have? (president's ring, award pins, mother's/father's pins, sweetheart pins, etc) We have award jewelry for members and non members who have distinguished themselves in the field of music, and we have accessory jewelry as well (crest rings, dinner rings, lavalieres) |
Name your GLO Sigma Alpha Iota
Describe your badge and new member pin Our badge looks like this: http://www.sai-national.org/resource/badgeSAI.gif The Member-in-Training pin is just the pan pipes without the circle of pearls or greek letters. Where can you wear your badge? (does it have to be over the heart, is a suit jacket ok or does it have to be on the blouse/shirt, if you're wearing other pins (like an Order of Omega pin) do they have to be below your badge, etc) The Rules say... The pledge pin, regulation badge or patroness badge is placed on the left side, over the heart. It is always attached to dresses or blouses, never on suit jackets or coats (hmmm...maybe that's an outdated rule? I see tons of SAIs wearing their badges on suit jackets. Anyway...) The regulation badge should never be turned into a charm. The recognition pin is worn on a suit lapel or coat collar or lapel as a sign of fraternity membership when the badge cannot be seen. A guard may be attached to the badge with a short chain and pinned below and to one side of the badge. If the badge of another fraternity is also worn, it may be chained to the Sigma Alpha Iota badge or be kept separate, but it should not be worn above it. (The two may be worn at the same level beside each other.) Do you require new members to wear their pins at all times? They were when I was in college - not sure how it is nowadays. Can you attach anything to your badge? (chapter guard, etc) Attach away! Can you use a badge buddy? Yes. Can you make your badge into a pendant or ring? NO! What other official jewelry does your GLO have? (president's ring, award pins, mother's/father's pins, sweetheart pins, etc) We have Awards - the Ring of Excellence (fraternity's highest honor), Sword of Honor, Ruby Sword of Honor, Diamond Sword of Honor, Rose of Honor, Rose of Dedication (those are all guards), and Patroness Badges. Also, I believe the National President's badge is made of diamonds instead of pearls, and is slightly larger. There are also special badge guards for National Officers and Province Officers, and probably lots of other things I don't know about! Thanks aephi alum, for starting this thread! |
?
can someone please explain to me what a "badge buddy" is??? This might be something I know by another name, but who knows...

Delta Zeta Sorority Describe your badge and new member pin Golden lamp with a diamond in the flame, surrounded by wings, resting on an ionic column with 4 seed pearls at the base of the lamp, Greek letters "DZ" in black enamel on the lamp. New member pin is a black enamel diamond shaped pin w/a golden lamp in the center. *I'm apparently not talented enough to insert the pic of it here, so I give up! Where can you wear your badge? (does it have to be over the heart, is a suit jacket ok or does it have to be on the blouse/shirt, if you're wearing other pins (like an Order of Omega pin) do they have to be below your badge, etc) Badge can be worn with professional/business professional attire...rule of thumb, badge is never to be worn with jeans. Can be worn on a suit jacket/vest/sweater, as long as the item is fastened, and not intended to be removed. (If you plan on taking your suit jacket off, or wear it unbuttoned, it should be worn on the blouse underneath). Any other pin should be worn below the badge. Do you require new members to wear their pins at all times? No. Can you attach anything to your badge? (chapter guard, etc) Yes, guards & officer dangles are permitted. Also, if a woman is "pinned" by a fraternity man, she can connect her badge to the fraternity pin much like a guard is attached. Can you use a badge buddy? Not likely. Can you make your badge into a pendant or ring? No, darn it. What other official jewelry does your GLO have? (president's ring, award pins, mother's/father's pins, sweetheart pins, etc) National President's Pin (I think?), Woman of The Year Pendant, Fathers & Mother's pins, several awards pins, and for those milestones like 50 years (Order of the Golden Rose), etc. |

Badge Buddies Are.....
To answer the question about Badge Buddies......
They are decorative pieces of fabric to which some members (generally older women or highly recognized members) attach their badge, chapter guard if applicable, and any recognition pins they may have. Then, the Badge Buddy (piece of fabric) only is pinned to the blouse. It is meant to save wear and tear on your blouse. |
