New Chapter beginning at Georgetown
There's a new APO chapter beginning at Georgetown
College in KY (hopefully....interest meeting is mid-Nov). Any APO's in the Lexington area? I'm sure we could use the support! UKy's chapter is supposed to be our "big brother" chapter. |
Congratulations! I pledged at the "other" Georgetown. Good luck!

APO @ Georgetown C.
I'm looking forward to the extension of Alpha Phi Omega to Georgetown College.
COuple of things. I didn't have any useful hits on a google search on "alpha phi omega" & "georgetown college", but most of the time I look for people within 15 miles anyway, so there are a lot of them at UK. :) Looks like a healthy social greek system at GC, so the administration is probably not likely to cause problems on that end (the way they did with Loyola College of Baltimore for example) OTOH, your issue may be with G.I.V.E (Georgetown Investing in Volunteer Education) (I'm sure you know the acronym, but other readers may not) in that they may feel they need to completely control community service at Georgetown. Let us know how things go! Randy Finder Section 84 (DC &MD) staff |
A couple of people (one admin, one student, both social greeks/
alums) were concerned with the "social frat/soror aspect," esp. pledging, the wearing of pledge pins, etc. I think we allayed their fears, and hope that social greeks will be involved (good chance a Lambda Chi will be a leader of the organizing group). Like the Centre College APO chapter, we may find a different word to using instead of "pledge" and "pledging"...Centre uses "Pillar" (should start with 'P' to explain the 'P' on the badge)...my idea is "Philantropos", Greek for "Lover of men/humanity/your-neighbor". The administration (Dean of Students, Director of Volunteer Activities, including GIVE) are all on-board with APO at GC. In fact, we're expecting students involved in the GIVE program to form a core APO group. GIVE is basically just a list of community organizations that want student volunteers.... the Dir. of Vol. Act. simply matches interested students with opportunities (GIVE isn't an organization or anything.) Thanks for the response. |
Social Greeks
Well, since 13 of the 14 founding brothers of Alpha Phi Omega were in social fraternities at the time of the founding (and as far as I know continued activity in those socials) there certainly are opportunities for social greeks to participate. :)
The wearing of pledge pins and the concept of pledging are similar to what is done by social fraternities. That does not indicate that we are a social fraternity, however at my chapter (Kappa @ Carnegie-Mellon) we did discourage people from pledging a social GLO and APO the same semester (from a simple time management aspect). Pledge one first and then the other, we had brothers who did it in both orders. I'm not really sure why Centre uses Pillar. Most of the time when changes like that are made its due to pressure from the administration becuase there are no socials on campus, but that doesn't appear to be the case at Centre. It may be appropriate for the section chair to talk to those will hesitations. Always helps when the appropriate members of the admin are on board, makes the paperwork easier. :) I hope the Dir of Vol Activities is willing to be an advisor. OK, so GIVE isn't a "rival" organization. :) Sounds like a ready source of both people who may be interested and community groups who can use service from an Alpha Phi Omega IG/PG/chapter. Actually, our Section Chair, who has already visited the
campus, is a Centre alum, and was involved with the decision to use "Pillar" instead of "Pledge" (at least he was an active APO at the time) I'm not sure, but I think that was a decision of the APO's, not the admin....but I hear that recently they've started using the word "Pledge." Would have to ask a Centre APO. It is probably best for our campus if we start off as "non-social" as possible...perhaps over the next few years, as students "get used" to APO being on campus, no one will care what terminology APO uses. |
OK, forgot the Section 67 chair was a Centre Alumnus. NOt sure of their current terminology, though traditions like using a different name for pledge classes can stick...
ONe way in which being vewed as a "non-social" will help. Is there any sort of intergreek competition at Georgetown were Alpha Phi Omega could be viewed as a neutral who could run such a competition? BTW, the group might think about helping the Kappa Delta chapter at GC with their Girl Scout effort... Randolph Finder |
re: APO @ GC
Actually, on this campus, if APO attempted to get involved
in "Greek Games", even as a referee, that might be seen as an attempt by APO to "join" the "social greek" group... I think that would backfire! (Might be a good idea at other campuses). Helping with social greek service projects is something I hope DOES happen....of course, they'll have to agree to let us help :) |
APO @ Georgetown College: Meeting!
The interest/organizational meeting for APO at GC has been
scheduled. Any central-KY area APO's who'd like to join us are welcome! Mostly, this will be APOs explaining to a group of students (who know little or nothing about APO) what the group is (and is not). Wed, Nov 13, 7:30pm, on campus For more info, contact: kjoiner0@georgetowncollege.edu |
Greek Games
Refereeing the greek games is something that sholdn't be strived for in the open, but rather should be suggested by someone else, like a dean of greek affairs if you have one. :) And shouldn't be your first on campus project. As you say, could be taken wrongly...
As for their service projects, the ideal *eventual* status is that the school starts requiring community service of its social greeks and that APO is respected enough that they start asking APO how they can help with APO's projects in order to get hours (but that will be a year or more down the road) Congrats on the sceduling of the interest meeting, are you going to have brothers from UK, staff or elsewhere there that day? And do you have enough rush literature from the National Office? Randy |
re: naraht
The APO section leader, along with APO members from UK and
maybe some other nearby chapters, will be at our organizational meeting. Actually, I have no "rush" materials, except the APO website... hopefully the section leader will bring some! (Maybe I should email him to remind him!) |
meeting
Its good you've got such a turnout from the area.
Definately email the section chair to make sure they bring literature. Probably best if both enough for the day and more so that the people interested can hand out to other people in the days and weeks to come. A good chunk of the APO rush literature is available online at http://www.apo.org/publications/docu...category.shtml . Take a look! Randolph Finder |
