Alumnae involvment on the cheaper side...
Okay, I today became Alumna after petitioning nationals due to financial and personal reasons. I was wondering - short of joining an alumnae chapter, which Im sure costs money - what other ways can an alum be active? I will be incredibly active within my chapter seeing that I have the rest of this year, and one more to go... but is there any other ways maybe to get involved nationally?

I don't know how ya'll do it but if a member had to be inactive or declare alum status for financial reasons I wouldn't want them to be as active as those are that still have to pay dues. Don't let it look like you just wanted to get out of paying dues, that could create some resentment.
As an alum I'd just suggest you hang back and help where the chapter asks you to. Or at least that's what I'd tell a recent alum from my chapter... Help with rush.. give names, bring people to parties.. That's about it.. But I guess that stuff doesn't work for sororities... |

I PM'ed you. |
Usually alumnae chapter dues are very reasonable and are only due once a year. For example, our chapter dues are only $30 a year. I'm sure that once you contact your local alumnae chapter and explain your situation, they can let you know how much their dues are AND get you involved in a volunteer position. I don't know of any alumnae chapter that ever has enough people to do all the things that need to be done!
Good luck! |
I echo Barbara's comments. Alumnae dues are much less than collegiate dues and often are reduced or waived for first year members (i.e. new grads or those on UAS-- undergrad alum status). In Pi Phi, students pay their first year alumnae dues prior to graduation (or taking UAS).
There are a lot of things you can do that just require a smiling face, enthusiasm and coming to meetings. Alumnae clubs are designed for busy women- our meetings are short, efficient but filled with sisterhood (and usually food and an educational program). There are many things that your local club could use help with... and they would love to see you! Service projects always use another hand, plus sometimes are joint collegiate/ alumnae activities. I wish you luck! Karen Gunther Director of Academics, Pi Beta Phi |
