Pledge mom!

Well I am super excited because one of my good guy friends asked me to be his pledge wife! The other fraternity that I have good friends in, SigEps, don't have a pledge dad/pledge kid system (not the chapter here anyway) so I was sad that I was probably going to get to miss out on having a pledge son...So now I am a Lambda Chi pledge mom...it's funny because his pledge grandma turns out to be in my pledge class! Since I can't make it to their pledge mom event till late (I've got a rehearsal), my sister is going early for me to meet her great-grandma...yay! What should I get my kid? Do any of you guys do this at your school?

I don't really understand Pledge "wife" or Mom is in a fraternity. We have them for our sorority the new member educator. can you explain

Our school does it, or a variation on this . . . like, if your pledge mom (what most groups call "big sisters") is dating a guy, he's your "pledge dad." And if he's in a fraternity that has the pledge dad/pledge kid system, then you could have a "pledge brother" -- you can get some really complicated family trees like that. It's strange, but I think it's cute.

Hmmmm that's interesting. What I call my pledge mom (or my Phi Mom :)) is my new member educator. I'm not sure Phi Mus are allowed to be "pledge moms" in that capacity... I know that we are not allowed to be Little Sisters to a fraternity.

How is it done? Who picks? Any girl from and group?

What I have seen is this:
All plegdes get a pledge dad in thier chapter who is a brother they know the best, and they are mutually selected. then, the pledge dad gets one of his gal pals who is ina sorority to be the pledge's 'mom.' basically it is a party one night that they have, the pledge recieves a a cup and a bucket and a t shirt from the mom, and the pledge gets his mom a flower and (i think) a shirt. thats how they do it from what ive seen anyway!

I wanna be a pledge mom when im in a sorority!!!! :D

We used to have Dad's and stuff like that but we aren't allowed to do that any more... and we can't be moms to any fraternity members... According to our ASA Nationals this goes against our bylaws or something like that so we can't do it... it kinda sucks though cuz my new member class was the first to not get a dad so it was kinda a bummer cuz everyone else has dad's except for us...

What the heck?!? I've never heard of anything like this.

Optimist Prime 10-17-2002 01:07 PM

I wish we did this. OUr system sucks.

AlphaSigLana 10-17-2002 02:41 PM

We can't do this(I'm in ASA) too. So what happens if a pledge mom breaks up with the pledge dad? ;)

This is how it works at my school:

When you're in a Greek system you get a pledge mom (sorority) or pledge dad (fraternity) who looks out for you, gives you gifts, etc. Some people call this their little sister or little brother, but at my school the terms pledge mom and dad are commonly used. Your pledge mom or pledge dad often asks a good friend or sig. other to be their pledge spouse- usually it's another Greek, but it doesn't have to be. So then you have a set of pledge parents who both look out for you and whatever. Usually if you are a pledge spouse and you are Greek, you get your kid gifts with your letters on it, like picture frames or shorts or baseball caps or whatever. Pretty much every house on my campus does this, and I'd never really heard about it being against any rules till I read this site. I guess it sort of makes sense but it's a fun innocent tradition at my school!

Oh, also it's usually not a good idea to ask a boyfriend or girlfriend to be your pledge husband or wife because if you break up, your kid has a dysfunctional pledge family! A lot of people still have their S.O.s do the job though. My pledge dad is my mom's longtime bf. Of course, sometimes it doesn't matter. My friend has a pledge kid with her ex-boyfriend and even though they're broken up, she talks to her pledge son all the time.

Haha, this actually happened to my friend and from what I hear it's sort of common on our campus! Weird huh?
