Ladies would you do this?

Would you give birth to you own grand kids if you daughter could not have kids?

This lady did...

Yes, I would! :D

Hootie 10-15-2002 03:29 PM

I dunno that I would do it for my grandchildren. That's a little TOO weird. But I did have a coworker who carried her sister's baby as a last resort for her to have children. So she was mommy aunty.

Lady Pi Phi 10-15-2002 04:35 PM

Just to clarify..she wouldn't be "mommy aunty" unless her genes were used to create the child. I would think this sister was just the surrogate mother, and the egg and the sperm were from the other sister and brother-in-law. This woman was just carrying the child she wasn't a genetic donor.

Just another thing...

That is very generous of this woman...but I would never ask my mother to do that, nor would I accept her offer...as women age it become increasingly difficult for them to bear children...I would be afraid of putting my mother at risk to develop complications or put her through undue stress, and it's a lot of stress on the babie as well if the woman is older...I just don't think it's worth the risk...so I would never do it.

No, I wouldn't. This woman is very generous.

In a word - NO! Without trying to start a debate here, I'm not big on these radical measures for the infertile.

LeslieAGD 10-15-2002 06:35 PM

My initial response varied from "hell no" to "well...maybe." Like Hootie said, I would probably be more comfortable doing it for my sister than for a daughter. I think I would personally have to experience pregnancy and motherhood before I would be able to make a decision about doing that for someone else.

I think having children is a privelege, not a right. Some people just can't. I would rather see a childless person adopt a child who needed a home than spend tons of money and energy on fertility treatments or other drastic means, which I definitely think would include asking your mum to be surrogate mother to your child.

Well said, and I agree.

My answer to the original question: No -- make that HELL NO. But then, I don't even want to have kids in the first place, so it's more likely than not that I would never possibly be in that position.

It's easier and cheaper to adopt! Do that instead folks.

Could be!! See, forget all this moving and settling down crap! You really need to transfer to FSU so we can party! :D

I don't think I could do it. Besides, I'm all about adoption. My parents gave up after an initial consulting appointment with a fertility doctor and decided that there are much better, easier, more natural ways of expanding a family. It took some patience, but that's how we got my brother.

The article said that the couple had one failed adoption attempt that had taken them three years. This doesn't make sense to me. There are plenty of children out there who need good homes. Most are at a disadvantage because they're not infants, not in this country, not white, or all of the above. But if you really want a child that much, you should be willing to look beyond wanting the neigbors to think you've had the baby yourself. My parents had to travel to another continent to adopt. They're unique in our adoption group because they only did it once. Many of these families have children of many different nationalities. One woman jokes that it's addictive. I'd believe it-- just ask Carnation!

Building on what AchtungBaby said, anybody ever want to form a genetic posse? Why is it that you have to have a learner's permit and pass a test to drive a car, when you can just have a kid without even thinking? With the world in its current state of overpopulation, we should do something about all the idiots who are breeding. Hey, you! Out of the gene pool!
