St. Patrick's Day Approaching!
 

I'm curious as to how different people & different chapters celebrate St. Patrick's Day. When I was in school, one fraternity held a wake (I forget the name of the "dearly departed), with green beer, of course.

What traditions do you enjoy? Wearing of the green, making soda bread, dancing, ????

We eat corned beef, fly a huge Irish flag (my Scottish son-in-law probably hates that), and watch "Luck of the Irish" and "Darby O'Gill and the Little People".

YES!!! Paddy Murphy! That was always a hoot!

When I was in college, one of the college bars right next to campus opened at 7 am with 10 cent green beers. They went up in price by 10 cents every hour. Half the campus was completed sloshed by noon. It was insane.

Now, I usually make corned beef and, of course, wear green. It's also my son's birthday (and his fiance's birthday) so until he moved away, there was a birthday celebration. He usually wanted to go out for Mexican food and that was easy to do on that day...lol.

Please recall the following actions are now considered HAZING, no longer the FUN, SISTERLY TOGETHER TIME we had planning and executing the event.


As new initiates, our pledge class was required to make/host a Wake-Up Breakfast for all our elder sisters in the house.


Keeping the date secret was difficult due to all the odd hours live-in sisters would be up and awake at the house, especially the nursing students with very early clinicals.


We chose to make green pancakes, served with green and orange-colored sugar and orange juice, for a St Patricks Day breakfast. Some of the live-in sisters chose to get up earlier than they truly had to, making excuses to get to campus without eating to avoid the event.


Have to admit the food was a bit sweet for that time of day, and not too nutritional. And yes, we cooks were allowed to eat the same breakfast, too.

My University was on the quarter system back then, so St. Pat's Day fell either on finals week or during spring break. If during finals week, the green beer was flowing at the campus bars, we would wear green and watch the annual parade in downtown Cleveland regardless of finals.
