I'm happy that the Fraternity crafted a statement that put the onus squarely where it should be: on Caleb Wilson and his family and their well-being. There was no delay in addressing this tragedy or stonewalling. And I'm happy of the expression of support for the police investigation. And now we must let this process play itself out in terms of the investigation.

An update on the tragedy:

Sources with knowledge of the investigation into Southern University Caleb Wilson’s death told the WAFB I-TEAM Tuesday, the story that was initially told to police about Wilson collapsing at a Baton Rouge BREC park was fabricated.

Sources said pledges with Omega Psi Phi were actually at a warehouse in Baton Rouge when Wilson was punched in the chest and collapsed. He was later pronounced dead by doctors at an area hospital.

There were nine pledges in a line during an unsanctioned fraternity ritual and each one was allegedly forced to take blows to the chest, the sources said. When Wilson was hit, sources with knowledge of the events said he reportedly collapsed to the ground and began having a seizure at the warehouse.

Decades ago when I was in college, you couldn't miss seeing the daily Omega Lines. They performed at the main campus bus terminal, outdoors, next to the student center.

Do the Omegas still perform those types of public line manuevers?

Officially, since 1990, all NPHC groups made pledging illegal. So you don't have these activities now, except for Membership Presentation Programs (wrongly called Probates, since that was a part of the previous era with pledging with its public nature). The problem now is the proliferation of "underground" activities, which are prohibited not only as sanctioned activities but also prohibited for an aspirant to consent to participate in these activities making them ineligible to become a member of the Fraternity.
