KENT, Ohio (WJW) — Following the tragic death of a Bowling Green State University student who was pledging with a fraternity, Ohio university presidents met to discuss hazing on campuses across the state.

Kent State University President Todd Diacon spoke to the media Tuesday to talk about that meeting, which also involved Gov. Mike DeWine.

The governor is reportedly calling for Ohio to become a hazing-free state, and legislation is being proposed to make consequences more serious for those involved in hazing, making it a felony in some cases. Diacon said the university presidents are unanimous in supporting this bill.

Right now, the penalty in Ohio for hazing is about the same as a speeding ticket.

There's nothing stopping them from charging people with assault, manslaughter, etc. Hazing in and of itself doesn't have to be an independent crime.
