New Titles- Provisional, Associate, Emerging

Many Greek organizations are moving away from the term "colony" in favor of "Provisional Chapter", "Associate Chapter", "Emerging Chapter", etc.

These are a few that I am aware of using new terms:

Alpha Sigma Alpha - "emerging chapter"
Theta Phi Alpha- "emerging chapter"

Alpha Sigma Phi- "provisional chapter"
Kappa Alpha- "provisional chapter"

Sigma Tau Gamma- "associate chapter"

This is probably a trend that we will see more of in the next year or so.

I have to state that I absolutely detest the “emerging chapter” business. It reminds me of the chest burster in Alien.

Plus it’s another term you can’t turn into a verb easily. “A chapter is emerging at Foo Foo State” sounds ridiculous. Plus, you don’t know if it’s going to be a chapter until it charters. Same problem with “provisional” or “associate.”

If “colony“ isn’t PC or something. how about a different term that doesn’t usurp “chapter”?

Delta Gamma has used “Establishment” for a while now.

So DG uses phrases such as, "Delta Gamma is pleased to announce the upcoming establishment of a new chapter at Clemson during the Fall 2021 semester."

Or, "Delta Gamma announces the re-establishment of its Montana State chapter beginning in Fall 2019."

And to 33girl, yes, the word colony brings to mind the Original Thirteen, with all the currently un-PC things that occurred back then.

Alpha Phi Omega has used "Petitioning Group" for a *very* long time.

My arts fraternity, predominately black, uses "expansion effort" to describe a group of people in the early stages of organizing a chapter OR a service area that we've targeted for expansion; and "interest group" to describe an expansion effort that has been approved for charter.

ROTFLMAO

"Emerging chapter" sounds like a pimple.

IMO, a colony is a colony, and the colony may not make it to chapter status. When my local was absorbed into AEPhi, we were a colony of 10 women, and we were told that we would not be chartered until we had 25 actives. We had 22 members when we were chartered, because MIT ... but if we hadn't had 12 new ladies join our colony, we'd have gone back to being a local.
