"Get a job!"

OK, I just have to vent here...

Last night I was watching Crossfire. They quoted an email that someone had sent them, basically with the message that W should pay a little more attention to the economy instead of trying to distract us by pointing at Iraq. This individual had been laid off, couldn't find a job, and was worried about supporting himself and his family.

Bob Novak (the right-wing anchor) responded, "Get a job!"

As many of you know, I was laid off a few months ago. I have been totally unable to find a job in my field, despite excellent credentials, an aggressive job hunt, and a good network. I'm not out of work because I'm lazy; I'm out of work because no one is hiring because the economy is in the toilet and W is ignoring it. (After all, *his* job is secure for the next 2 years. Hopefully, not much beyond that.)

I'm suddenly proud to be a Democrat...

The president really doesn't have a huge impact on the economy. This war-talk isn't helping though. If we're going to war let's get it over with. Historically economies have a huge boom following wartime... That's really the only way Mr Bush could actually effect the economy. Otherwise, making it improve and such is just something that the market SHOULD take care of itself.

The economy is what gave his father the boot and it will probably lead to the same fate for him. He should learn war can never keep you popular to long, when the economy is bad. How come when ever a Bush is in office the economy goes to crap?

Because it is usually the previous administration's policies that get us there! When are people going to realize it's CONGRESS---not the president---that does this to us? Vote out your congressmen and senators if you don't like what's happening. And ask them why they screw with Social Security when their own retirement is set for life with no decreases and comes from a different fund!

Actually the economy started going down while Clinton was still in office, it just takes awhile for the effects to show. Not that I'm saying Bush's administration has nothing to do with it... just that it didn't all originate with him.

I would agree with that, however what idiot told Bush to go out and tell everyone we're heading into a recession (because GWB wanted to pass his tax laws)? The market is based on expectations, the oblivious small investor all of a sudden became jumpy because of that speech and sold their investments and went into the money market funds.

Then you pile on the fact that GWB is an "isolationist" and incompetent regarding foreign relations, we'll be lucky to get through relatively unscathed by 2004...

Whether or not the president has any degree of influence over the economy (and he does - not as much as, say, Greenspan, but he does have influence) is irrelevant. He's the guy at the top, so he (and by extension, his party) is going to get the blame, or the credit. Clinton got reelected in 1996 in part because the economy was doing well and people wanted 4 more years of the same.

Let me point out that while Congress makes the laws, the president can veto them, and in a Congress so evenly split, overturning a veto isn't exactly easy.

What we really need is for Congress and the president to work together to improve the economy. Lowering interest rates didn't do it; we plainly need something else to spur growth. I don't think war is the answer; when we went into Afghanistan I didn't see any increase in defense spending or any improvement in the economy. But instead of working with Congress, W is holding up Iraq to distract the American public from the fact that the economy sucks. And he's doing it right before midterm elections. Coincidence? I think not.

doubleblue&gold 10-08-2002 11:48 AM

so tell it to Congress!

they have the real power!

VOTE! Elections are coming----do something about it.
I have no respect for people that complain and don't vote.

An it isn't just Republicans or just Democrats. There are rich fat cats in BOTH parties!

The1calledTKE 10-08-2002 11:52 AM

Things went down a little during the Clinton adminstration but thats when he was a lame duck and held little power. The economy we to crap because Bush gave a tax cut when we could afford to give one. We all liked the extra money then but are paying for it now. Bush could care less about the economy. thats why all he talks about is Iraq and tring to finish what his daddy didn't. Sept 11 helped hurt the economy but Bush made it worse.

The1calledTKE 10-08-2002 11:53 AM

I always vote for the big elections. not always democrat either if I think the other canidate is better.

aephi alum 10-08-2002 12:20 PM

Likewise. I haven't missed a major election since I was eligible to vote.

Amen to that! I haven't had any luck either and hear ya on that!

chicagoagd 10-08-2002 12:36 PM

Do you think they'll really get the voting thing straightened out before the next election? 2 years later and Florida is still having problems tallying the vote.

People who use personal attacks (like Bob Novak) as a response do that when they have nothing intelligent to say.

lifesaver 10-08-2002 12:40 PM

If the dude is that worried about supporting his family, he could always get a job at Costco or something. That would cover the bills. Wouldnt be able to save for juniors college plan, but wouldnt have to worry about the repo man. Hey, I lost my job last year and took a crappy job to stay afloat. Sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Rudey 10-08-2002 12:58 PM

I just find it incredibly interesting to watch people who haven't got a single clue about Economics or public finance just throw all the blame on Bush.
