For as long as she can remember, LaLee Wallace's family has picked cotton. It's the main reason why they continue to live in poverty, but as this great-grandmother and her family know, the legacy of cotton is not an easy one to shake. Nominated for a 2001 Best Documentary Feature Oscar(R), this poignant, compelling film follows three generations of African Americans from the Mississippi Delta as they live with extreme poverty and illiteracy. Paralleling LaLee's struggle is Reggie Barnes, the superintendent of the West Tallahatchie schools, who is trying to raise school standards, attract qualified teachers and acquire supplies.

Sounds good. I may have to record it to show to my class. I am getting started on teaching them African-American history and I have A LOT of work ahead of me! All supplements will help. I'm accepting ALL suggestions!

I saw this and it was really excellent. I was so engrossed in it that I missed class. At some points I was crying because it really made me realize just how blessed I am and how fortunate I am to have the family that I have. This is something that I definately think students need to see, especially urban students so they can see another side of whats going on in the US and appreciate what they have even if its little. This definately woke me up.

I love documentaries and I really enjoyed this one. If you haven't seen it, please do so. This really makes you think how blessed we indeed are. I was really thinking about the things I take for granted like running water. Thank you Jesus for what you have BLESSED me with!

IT'S REAL YA'LL!

The thing about it is...PEOPLE are living like this in 2002!!! We are not talking about how things WERE BACK in 1952.

This was a really great documentary! I must agree with you ladies. I live in Arkansas and am very familiar with the rural delta regions which are not acceptable in these days and times. You would seriously think that this could not be happening in such a digital world, but it is. So many are lost and don't know where to go, but what these people showed me is to not care what others think of where I am from, my intelligence, my life. Its mine and GOD has a plan for it, he has one for them too. It may not be here on this earth but he has one for them.

Lalee's Kin

This is in reply to the message posted about Lalee's Kin. I saw this documentary and I was so shocked and saddened that epopel live like that today. It has actually inspired me to become a tecaher with the Tecah For America Program. Through this program they go to rural and inner city areas and train recent graduates to teach in schools. I am considering actually going to Mississippi and teaching there. I think that everybody should watch this and become involved in improving schools for our children.
