They are at it again - this time @ Oklahoma State Univ.

WTF is up with some historically white fraternities and blackface? I mean, damn! (Please excuse my language, but dag.........) This hot mess just happened last week!

I am sooo tired of this!

Oh, and of course there are pics

I swear this country needs some SERIOUS prayer.:(

HumbleHeart 09-26-2002 10:48 AM

Will they ever learn?

I am totally speechless! There aren't words that can explain the pervasive ignorance in those pictures.

2DISCRETE4U 09-26-2002 12:54 PM

What, is this becoming a new trend?? Are they trying to see who will/won't get in trouble for it??
This is utterly ridiculous!! :(

The article was interesting, but I wonder why I haven't seen anything at the O'Collegian, the Oklahoma State newspaper Web site?

I also found it interesting that the officials didn't want to make "free speech martyrs" out of the creatures. Perhaps they didn't want a replay of Auburn, where those officials had to capitulate and let those retromingent freaks back on campus.

FuzzieAlum 09-26-2002 02:29 PM

I apologize for crashing your board, but I just want to apologize on behalf of all the historically white fraternity and sorority members who find this sort of behavior repugnant and disgusting. No one can reasonably claim that these guys didn't know what they were doing (even if you're ignorant about blackface, you have to know what a Klan robe symbolizes).

I am pleased to see that AGR's nationals is not just looking the other way on this. They seem to realize what an egregious thing their members have done here. But how many moronic chapters are going to do things like this before they realize what they're doing is at the very least going to get them in trouble and at most just how wrong it is? How long before all historically white fraternity groups are perceived as being full of "white racist jerks"? Personally, I'd like to see the NIC proactively take a stance against this stuff. It shouldn't take resolutions from the top to stop folks from doing this, but ... apparently it's going to.

RedefinedDiva 09-26-2002 05:25 PM

Thank you, FuzzieAlum for the apology. I appreciate it. However, I don't think that you should feel responsible for apologizing for those members of WGLOs that are IGNORANT. THEY need to have their tails up in here apologizing... But, if they felt that they had something to be sorry about, they wouldn't have done it in the first place.

This behavior has to stop, yet I feel that it won't. The reason say this is because there are so little repercussions of their actions. For instance, as one school official states, "We don't want to make free speech martyrs out of stupid perpetrators," she said. "As offensive and insensitive as their actions were, they did not meet the muster of any university code of conduct violations."
What does it take to force these students to show a shred of decency and respect? White America is constantly shrugging these incidents off as "stupid" or labeling these perpetrators as uninformed or lacking in knowledge of diversity and multi-culturalism in our country.

It's sad that I have to constantly be reminded that there are White Americans out there that are actually interested in getting to know our cultures and becoming our friends. Then, I see images like that and wonder if things are ever going to change. It sets us back. I DO NOT believe that the national head of these organizations do anything or ever going to do anything. It sounds good on paper and in theory, but will it ever go into action?

markmywords 09-26-2002 07:24 PM

No it probably won't end. Some white frats won't stop wearing blackface. Some Black frats won't stop hazing. No matter what the national orgs say stupid people are stupid people.

At It Again @ OK -State

I mean no disrepect to my reply but the issues of our organizations hazing and people dying far out-weigh a prank of white frat boys in "black-face."

If we don't stop the senseless hazing we all are going to lose our organizations. To me, again this is more serious than worrying about the white boys.

I have gotten tired of young greek-lettered men (not sure about the women) debating issues about being a paper frat or pledging old school. Peace

SapphireSweetie 09-27-2002 12:32 AM

I am going to take a page out of FuzzieAlum's book and apologize for this heinous and atrocious act on behalf of the historically WGLOs. I can't say anything or do anything more than sit here and commiserate with this ignorant action, as I sit here and stare in disbelief at these pics. I wonder if anyone will learn that expression is not as free as one thinks it is as there is always consequences for an action, no matter how innocent or guiless it was intentionally was, but I guess this is asking too much.

All I can say is.....Those little boys are assholes. They need to grow up.

Bamboozled 09-27-2002 10:53 AM

Round up the usual suspects...

This is becoming all too commonplace. Why is it that in every incident that we've heard of students wearing black face/klan uniforms/nooses always involves a WGLO as opposed to non-members of WGLOs? Is there something about these orgs that fosters a sense of white supremacy? Or are non-members of WGLOs just more enlightened or perhaps just not stupid enough to take pictures? The events are atrocious in and of themselves and the fact that WGLO members are now the usual suspects just baffles me. What gives?

Alpha Gamma Rho Issues Public Apology for Incident- Three Suspended
From Fraternity

The following letter to the university community was issued today by
Brad Atkinson, President of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity.
On September 20, Alpha Gamma Rho hosted a costume party. Three
individuals not only wore costumes that were racially offensive, but
also exhibited culturally insensitive and completely unacceptable
behavior. As a result of their behavior, the Chapter Adviser has
suspended these individuals from Pi Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho.
On behalf of the members of Pi Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho, I wish to
apologize to the entire Oklahoma State University Community. I'm
deeply sorry for the behavior of three of our members. When these
individuals along with their actions were noticed, they were asked to
leave. I'm deeply regretful that this incident has brought
embarrassment to the entire university family and our fraternity by
showing disrespect for the diversity of our students, faculty, and
staff.

I apologize especially to the African-American community at Oklahoma
State University and throughout the state and nation.
This behavior does not represent a point of view that is acceptable
in our fraternity. The entire executive team of Alpha Gamma Rho
officers condemns such behavior. We are taking steps to deal with
this incident and to ensure that it will not happen again. We deserve
the letters of reprimand from both the university and our national
office. We will be asking Dr. Earl Mitchell, Associate Vice President
for Multicultural Affairs, to conduct sensitivity training for the
entire organization.

This incident has been extremely embarrassing for our organization,
but it's also been a wake-up call that we need to recommit ourselves
to the Alpha Gamma Rho covenant to respect the dignity of all
people.

What is tripping me out the most is, didn't they see this when U of Auburn did it. The "ish" wasn't funny then, and it damn sure ain't funny now. Is it me, but I'm just not understaning how people still do this dumb "ish" over, over, time and time again. I guess I'm really just to old for the BS. It time to kick azz and take names later, because those knuckle heads went way to far.
