COB & New colony

I am curious as to the details of the COB process. Since I'm a junior at Texas A&M University (ultra competitive, juniors don't have much of a chance) COB would be the "best" way for me to enter an established GLO, but I'm not sure how that works here. Does anyone have an idea? I know that some chapters do accept members during the spring in an "non-announced" (non-public) rush.

Also, Panhel is voting to add a new GLO in Sept. It has been narrowed down to two orgs, and both are great! It would be a dream to start a new tradition here. I would absolutely LOVE to be a founder!!!! How does one go about letting the new GLO know they're interested?

Obviously I would ideally like to get in on the ground floor of a new GLO, but have been curious as to COB here. My first two years here I was totally dedicated to athletics, and now I would really love to open up a new chapter in my life and fill in some of the "gaps".

Thanks & Gig 'em!!

The "non-announced" rush is basically = COB. The good part is you do have a better chance of getting a bid despite your junior status, the bad part is you won't have all the sororities to choose from. If you know which ones do COB and you like them, I would say go for it.

Iowa Hawkeye was a founder of her DZ chapter - maybe she will be able to fill you in on how to get involved if that is what you would like to pursue.

Either way, GOOD LUCK!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

My chapter just recolonized last year and we held quite a few different COB activities the whole time. The way it worked for us is that we would plan some type of informal event (One time we had Karaoke and other times it was as simple as having people over to watch Friends) and invite friends who we thought might be interested in the house over for the activities. They were always very informal and were just a good way to meet new women. We would have to see a woman a certain number of times (each GLO has a certain number for COB I think, and I'm pretty sure that it varies) we would be able to offer her a bid

If you're interested in joining the new GLO, definitely go for it!!! I don't regret joining mine that way at all. While we mostly were freshmen, we did have a few upperclassmen also join, and their guidance with how the University works and stuff like that is soooooo apreciated! There are also awesome leadership opportunities that are available that ordinarily wouldn't be available to first or second year members. The downside is that at times it can seem like alot more work than other women in the other houses have (but its totally worth it!!)

If you're interested in the new GLO, definitely keep your eyes open for advertising around your campus next year and go to as many of the events they offer as possible.

Hope that answers your questions! :-)

Ok, I said I "know" some chapters accept new members in a non-formal recruitment, but I only "know of" them. One chapter I am not interested in, and the others that I have heard that do this, I don't really know many girls in the org. I guess a better question would be.... How do you let and org. know you are interested without going through formal rush?
Is COB a nationals policy, or does it vary from chapter to chapter, school to school?

COB ususally depends on two things.. (1) did the chapter make quota -the maximum number of new members that can be received from formal recruitment and/or (2) is the chapter total membership size below the maximum number allowed for the campus. Most nationals encourage chapters to continue COB if either condition (1) or (2) exists.

If you are interested in COB, you can usually register with the Greek Life office and they will forward your name and contact information to the chapters participating in COB. This would also be a way for you to let a new organization know that you would be interested in information about the formation of a colony.

Hope this helps

Hey TxAggie - I weould love to give you a little insight and advice into helping found a new colony - Just email me at IowaDZ@greekchat.com - we're right in the middle of rush week right now (on a break!) and I'll reply just as soon as I have some time to think about everything my sisters and I did to catch the attention of the nationals running recruitment http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

TXAggie,

Informal Recruitment (or Continous Open Bidding) occurs when chapters either:

1. Don't take quota during Formal Recruitment
2. Chapter total is not at maximum

You can contact your Greek Life Office (when Formal recruitment is over) to find out which chapters will be participating in COB. Greek Life should forward your name to those chapters.

If you are interested in helping colonize a new group on campus, you should let the Greek Life office know that as well. It could be that there is an established interest group already in place. You could affiliate with that group and assist in the colonization effort.

Good luck!

The best way to end up at a "non-public" COB event is to strike up a conversation with a sister in the house and casually mention that you are interested in rushing. Don't mention it right away, talk a little first so she doesn't think thats the only reason you are speaking w/ her. There's got to be one in a class or around campus??
