Too young to rush?
I've been reading the message boards for a while now and I want to say thank you to everyone for all the helpful advice for those of us who will be rushing this fall!
I'll be a freshman at the University of Colorado in Boulder this fall and rush starts Sept. 2nd. I sent in my application at the beginning of August, but I haven't received anything back, while some of my friends got their rush materials more than 2 weeks ago. I'm thinking the problem might be that I'm only 17. Are there any age restrictions on rush? If so, are there ways to get around them (parent permission, etc.)? I'm so excited to rush this fall and I'm hoping this won't get in my way! ------------------ ~Rachel~ |
I was 16. Nobody ever brought it up in rush--I'm sure at our huge campus that the sororities had more important things to investigate than our ages!

Sounds like you should call the Greek Life office and make sure they received your application? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
Good luck! |
That's so cool you're going to CU. I'm an alum - I pledged in '94 and graduated in '99 (lots of major switching.) Anyway, I think it's very common for people to not quite be 18 when they start college and I'm pretty sure there's no age restriction on rush. In fact, I'm pretty sure I knew a bunch of girls who pledged with birthdays as late as October/November. I'd recommend contacting the Panhel office to make sure they got your application. Worst case scenario is that you'll have to resubmit the forms. If I remember correctly you can still sign up for rush until pretty late in the game because it's pretty laid back there.
Anyway, good luck and be sure to report back to us on how everything goes. |
Age isn't a problem unless you are really really young like those really bright kids bc lets face it a 14 yr is way different than an 18 yr old. 17 is nothing. One of my sorority sisters is a yr ahead of me and she just turned 19- she'll be a junior. I am entering my sophmore yr and am almost 20.
What high school did you graduate from? I am from CO too. |
During the time I have been in my chapter, we have pledged 3 different girls (at different times) who were 16 years old. One of them is my little http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif It should not be a problem at all, plus if you graduated at that age, you must be pretty smart, and we all like smart people!

I rushed at age 17 - no problem. If you were, say, 14 or 15, I'd be concerned, but there's not much difference between 17 and 18, and most people are as ready to make commitments (like sorority membership) at 17 as at 18.
Good luck with rush! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif |
Thanks for all the advice and reassurance! I've left a message with the Greek Life office and hopefully I'll hear back soon. Move-in day is Wednesday and then Rush starts Sept. 2nd, with Bid Day on the 7th. I'm so excited! I loved reading SaraKT's thread, so I'll make sure to start one of my own when Rush starts! Thanks again!

BTW, AlphaSigLana, I graduated from Hinkley High School in Aurora.

Good luck in recruitment CURushee! Be sure and let us know what house you choose. Whatever you get, you're going to have a great time as a Greek!

One of my pledge sisters was 17 (she graduated early), and the only problem that she had was that on pref night, we were required to sign a form that we released the sororities from injury or whatever if we went on a bid day activity. Her parents had to drive 3 hours to sign it for her, because a fax was not official. So I might check and make sure that every single form needed has been signed by a parent.
Good luck and I know you'll do great! Missy ------------------ "To the world I promise temperance and insight and courage...." "Don't you think that life would be awfully boring, if the good times were all that we had?" -Pat Green |
I was 17 when I rushed also! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif It made no difference whatsoever to my sisters that I was a little younger than the rest of my pledge class. When I finally turned 18, they made a huge deal about my birthday and took me out for a night on the town! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

In my pledge class there were actually three girls who were 17. One had just turned 17 the summer before rush and the other two were within about six months of turning 18. Don't worry about age...it ain't nothing but a number http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
