Finding my father

My father was an alumni of a Greek organization at Trinity College in Hartford Conn. I have no idea which one though, does anyone know how I can find out which one he was in? I've been to the trinity web-site and they only list 4 fraternities and sororities, and I know there are more then that. I've written to the Sigma Nu chapter there but thats it. Can someone help?

That link will give you some of the fraternity's at the school as well as some other junk. I would really recommend contacting a couple fraternity's and student orgs and asking them for a list of all the other fraternities with possible contact info. That might be more accurate than webpages which aren't updated often.

Contact the school's alumni office. I know ours keeps track of what greek org everyone is in.

Trinity College a couple years back forced all fraternities to go co-ed or go away. Many, at the advice of their national organizations, decided to disband because of this rule, but recently some have returned as local fraternities not recognized by the school.

The best bet is to find out as much as you can about your father's fraternity (contact friends he went to school with, the alumni office). Get a list of the fraternities that were there (there can't be that many) and call the national offices to see if he is registered on the scrolls as a member.

Shouldn't be too difficult nowadays, two maybe 3 emails should do the trick... Good luck.

Ah-ha, here's some help...

Baird's manual never failed me yet :D

Here's a list of social fraternities that existed at Trinity College along with their founding dates at the college:

Delta Psi - 1850
Alpha Delta Phi - 1877
Delta Kappa Epsilon - 1879
Psi Upsilon - 1880
Alpha Chi Rho - 1895
Delta Phi - 1917
Sigma Nu - 1918
Theta Xi - 1949
Pi Kappa Alpha - 1953
Phi Kappa Psi - 1956
Q.E.D.* - 1960

An asterisk designates a local organization. Checked the book, couldn't find diddly squat on Q.E.D., hope he's not from that one!

Hope that helps!

Kelly,

If you know your father's full name and DOB, I would try to order a driver's licence search. You may be able to get his current, or his latest known address. Also, you might want to go to see your county clerk to do a search for marriage records on him. From this, you will be able to have his Social Security Number, and also address, DOB, and permanent address of the couple at the time of marriage.

Basically, as you go along, this will open up other pieces of information.

Voter Registration Records will also give you a valid mailing address.

I once went to a seminar given by Ed Pankau, a PI from Texas.
www.pankau.com
It was the best money I ever spent!

I would also try contacting each Fraternity's National, as they would have records of each man who pledged and in what year he did so. If you can narrow down to a 5 year span when your father would have pledged at his specific chapter, they should be able to find him. You would have to talk to the Historian or the Archivist, most likely.

Good luck to you!

Do you know when he was an undergrad? To add to what RUgreek posted, this is the info from the 1977 Baird's, which is the most recent copy that I have.

Social fraternities active as of that edition:
Delta Psi
Alpha Delta Phi
Delta Kappa Epsilon
Psi Upsilon
Alpha Chi Rho
Pi Kappa Alpha

Honor fraternities
Phi Beta Kappa
Sigma Pi Sigma
Psi Chi

Recognition fraternities
Delta Phi Alpha

These fraternities were inactive as of the 1977 edition (not including a few that went inactive before the 30s)
Delta Phi (1917-1965)
Sigma Nu (1918-1972)
Theta Xi (1949-1970)
Phi Kappa Psi (1956-1971)
Phi Mu Delta (1966-1968)

So if he was there in the early- to mid-70's that may narrow it down some.

Hi everyone, just a little update with how things are going, I thank you all for helping me. I have written to all the national organizations that were listed so far I have only heard back from Theta Xi, Pi Kappa Alpha and another one which I forgot. So since it has been a week since I e-mailed most of them and Two weeks since I e-mailed Sigma Nu. I am going to do another mass e-mailing tonight. My mo has been really good about trying to help me, though she doesn't remember what his fraternity was, she does remember the house. Just in case any of you have resources that I dont, His name is Ronald James Smith he would have graduated between 1968 and 1973 at Trinity College in Hartford. I dont want to get his current address or phone number, this is NOT to get in touch with him. Thank you all so much!!! And I'll keep you all posted!!

Just curious -- if you don't want his address, phone number, or a way to get in touch with him -- what exactly are you looking for?

Hmm, ok....

If that's what you want, that is your personal business. If I may say so, if you aren't interested in getting in touch with him, why would his greek org. be of any importance to you?

This is obviously something personal, and you don't have to respond, but I just think you may want to consider that. I have to say, I was under a different impression when you first posted that you were trying to find your father.

If you're mother can remember the symbols, that might help narrow your choices. Show her the greek alphabet and maybe she can recognize the symbols, once you hit two, you're most likely to discover the name. Also, if she remembers the address or location of the fraternity, you can contact the orgs or the school to find out who occupied the house during those years. If that doesn't work, you can contact the county deeds office to find out who owned the house during that time and contact the owner for information. I know that's more of a backwards way of finding out what you need, but since you do not want to contact him I cannot think of an alternative approach that would be simpler.

Good luck!
