The last straw

I've been having a few (but very subtle) problems
with my chapter within the last 8 months. One thing after another. Tonight I just
recieved an email about the assignment of littles, in which I don't have one,
despite my seniority and committment. I just found out about this, in other words
I've been left out of the loop, again. Now that pisses me off more than not
having one assigned, it is the principle of me being left out of the loop.

That was the last straw, I will probably quit now. However, that is very
unfortunate because I really enjoyed being with the organization and I don't want
them to win because I left (if that was the agenda).

The biggest part of the problem is that I DON'T KNOW THE ORIGION of it. I am
clueless of the issue they (well actually a few) have with me. I assume it could
be one of four things.

I'm definately will not exit quietly, however, I want my point to be made. I'm
going to send a email out, but I don't know what I will say in it yet.

How should I handle this?

I'm so sorry to hear that you are thinking of leaving your APO chapter. I went through a couple of times in my chapter when I wanted to quit, for various reasons (problems with other brothers, etc.). Have you sat down with your brothers and talked with them and asked directly what the problem was? Have you told them that you feel left out of the loop, and if they have issues with you, that you wish they would just come out and say it instead of doing things behind your back? I know this might not sound like the easiest and pleasantest way of doing things, but it may be the only way you will ever get any answers. I ask you, please talk with your brothers before you do something drastic like leave your chapter! APO needs brothers like you, dedicated and caring about what goes on!

I'm going to take your advice and stay. However, I will not commit myself like I used to. I have other places that I can use my energy and get something out of it.

Okay... I just read where you posted this on the "greek life" forum... everyone there gave some good advice (well, except for the person who just made rude comments  ). Anyhow, one thing I just thought of: does your chapter have a grievance committee? I know that taking this to them may be a drastic step, but it may be one you want to consider. Second, you had asked about becoming an alum early... I don't know about that, but I do know that you can become a life member while in college. Go onto national's homepage, they have the life member application form somewhere on there for downloading; I think it costs $50 while you are in college, up to one year after you graduate, $100 anytime after that; it's a one-time fee; then you will always be a part of APO, will always receive the "Torch & Trefoil", etc.
One more thing... I know that you are really frustrated right now. I am really happy that you have decided not to quit APO, but it saddens me to see that you are going to put your energies elsewhere. Did you talk with all of the brothers you were having problems with? Please, before you go elsewhere (leaving or energy-wise), talk with your brotherhood! Try to fix the troublespots and strengthen your chapter. You are a great asset to our organization; APO needs your energies to be focued here...

YiLFS,
Nicole
