No respect from other sororities
The sorority that i'm pledging is local, but we will soon expand. But, I starting to feel that the other more bigger and national sororities do not take us seriously or respect us. Yesterday, I was reading in the campus paper and Delta Zeta and Phi Mu had their ads congratulating their new pledges and congratulating eachother. But, they did not once congratualate our sorority. I believe that they think that we are some kind of reject sorority. I hope that my feeling is not true. I'm just venting alittle.

I really don't think you should take it personal. I think that since you all aren't in the same conference, they probably don't know that your sorority has gotten new pledges. Also there is a chance that the NPC doesn't know much about your sorority. The NPC at my school doesn't know much about any other sorority outside of their conference. So don't worry. Maybe if you actually become a member, you can help bridge that gap ;)

Run an ad congratulating THEM, as gentle reminder that they forgot someone!

I know alot of national recognized fraternties/sororites stick togther and don't see locals in a different light. I have no judgement about it myself because we have no locals here. I think one local fraternity tried to organize about 4 years ago but no girls would hang out with the guys because they were not nationally recognized. They disbanned and some joined the nationally reconized fraternties.

it's kinda the same over here. it has only been recently that our group has been getting recognition from national groups. (did we really have to do really well last semester to do so??? i don't know...) don't fret over it. you joined your local because you wanted to and enjoyed the sisterhood presented at rush. if you worry about what others will think of your group (you=whole house) then morale can drop and then your sisterhood will too. when our group upped our sisterhood and all looked like very happy sisters, people noticed.
kill them with kindness. if the others seem bitter at your presence on campus, just be extra sweet to them. it works somehow... |
Not Real?
I am in a local sorority and we were recognized at our school at least 5 years before many nationals had charters at the university. We are constantly being told that we are not "a real sorority" Many people have asked me if it was last year or the year before that we were recognized. All I can tell you is fuck them. I know for a fact that we do more philanthropies, fundraising events and bonding events than most of the other sororities on campus. Don't worry about what everyone else thinks, you know who you are and what you stand for and the relationships within your organization should be all that matters. If you want to shove it into someones face, I suggest to get out there, become as involved in the school as you can and show them what your made of. But always do this with respect to the other organizations. Showing a kind face and a friendly attitude will kill any disrespect you recieve. People notice, and you will be highly regarded for that. Just what chideltjen said.... kill them with kindness!!!!!

I imagine they don't realize you're on campus. I have a hard time imagining the two groups begrudging you your sisterhood.
AchtungBaby80, great idea - run an ad congratulating the other girls as a gentle reminder. What a diplomatic way to get your point across! |
Which One?
Pledge:
Are you in a certain type of local, (i.e. multicultural, Latino, Asian etc.)? Unfortunately, a lot of greeks in other councils simply don't know that you exist until you make yourselves visible. For example, your chapter President needs to attend all functions that the Greek Life office hosts so she can represent you. Get to know members of the NPC and other councils in your classes, or just go up and introduce yourselves on campus. Wear your letters everywhere! (My chapter used to wear at least one item of clothing that had the letters on it nearly every day of the week.) Good luck! |
I am from a school that has more "local" frats and sororities than National. I am from a national myself but I think that one of reasons that National Sororities do not do more with the local ones is because we have rules that all of the nationals have to follow and the locals do not have to follow those rules so it makes it a little harder on us.

I as wll come from local soroity and at times i feel that we are not respectd either although in the last semesters it has gotten so much better. In my own opinion I feel that we work much harder in many aspects then the NPC soroities on our campus. We do mutilpe philanthropies, as well as sisterhood events during the semester. We also dont have the financial stability like NPC soros. so we are constinly working hard to maintain a stable budget. We have been called fictional and make believe but i think this is what makes us just as good as them.
On a happier note many of the girls in the other sororities have taken the time to recognizd us and are hard work they also mention the fact that our sisterhood in incredible. And not to metion at this point we have been in contact with our Pan-Hel. and may soon have the chance to become an associative member on pan hel. council and passed on to extention. So local or not i feel if you are proud of th organization you represent then dont let others get in your way. And once you do this and prove to people that you are a sorority the respect will come. |
Why worry so much?
You seem to be doing as well if not better than they are. Just keep up the good work. Is this feeling of being disrespected also because you are not included in a lot of campus activities? |
